Well, my dr has now taken me off antidepressants and has put me on klonapin for anxiety, which I'm glad because I have yet to find an antidepressant that works for me. So, who can give me some info re klonapin. I'm supposed to take it as needed, but can have it up to 3x daily. Is it better to take it 3x day every day, or just as needed?? Any side effects in particular?? Any advice would be appreciated.

I would suggest you only take it as needed. When your anxiety is very high & your having a hard time coping. It's best with these drugs to kind of "keep them on their toes" so your body does not become dependent, so I would say to definately NOT take them on a scheduled dose 3x a day. I would say that if you are having a VERY difficult day you could take UP TO 3x a day, but would definately NOT do it unless absolutely necessary.

its better taken only as needed as it acts quickly, there were 2 doses, .5 and 2 mg, so which is yours?

hry33,

My dose is .5, but I've been taking half of that before bed...I definitely sleep better, but seem to experience extreme "hangover" effect in the morning. Any advice?? I feel like if I take the whole .5 tablet then "hangover" effect will be even worse. I haven't tried it during the day yet...I'm afraid to take it and have to go to work, you know?? Are you taking it?? How has your experience been??

deffiantly do not take it everyday.
In school there called memory erasers (very true) which is why I rarely take my perscription. Also I lost 10 lbs while taking them because I'd forget to eat for days. At first Klonapins may make you feel relaxed and happy because your able to be your self, but tolerance to klonapins builds up fast and I dont recomend them.

I didnt take it as prescribed and there are gaps of my life I don't remeber. A girl from CT told me that up there they are call memory erasers. However I had one friends tell me "you always forget"; my mom said I acted like I had altizmers, and my sister would tell me I looked anorexic and acted like a zombie. Generaly the meds make you froget, however I still occasionaly take it because it helps so much with my anxiety.

Hi Stacey,

I've recently been prescribed the same dosage 3x's a day too for the exception to use it daily......I've been on it since 10/12/04, I definitely feel more calm and relaxed and less stressed but it's making me really really tired...I can see that it can be addictive so be careful...I would agree to take it as needed for the research I've done on it shows it's a very powerful addictive drug....I have my follow-up with my Dr. this Thursday and I'm going to ask him if it's ok to take it as needed like you and as the other post stated because it is affecting my ability to function properly at work. (feeling too sedated)
As for side effects none at all except the feeling of tiredness but that may be to my consumption of it all the time..My advice will be to take it as needed too. Good Luck Stace!

to stacy
.5 is only a small dose so you are very sensitive to it, this will probably go away as you get used to it, carry a few tablets with you and take 1 when feeling anxious or panicky

loss of memory is unusual and not common from klonapin, just scare tactics, anxiety is famous for causing memory loss

there was deffinate memory loss on my part, however that is just from what I'm told....but then again I think I would take around 5 a day because I'm so nervous and at first I acted comfortable being myself while taking them. It got to the point where I'd forget If I had even taken it. It is a very addictive drug

Your Welcome Stace!! Took one at 6:00am this morning and finally I did not fall asleep and I feel great today!!! :) ...I will be taking another one in about a 10 minutes but honestly, I really am happy he prescribed this to me because I didn't think anything can help me as much as this drug is...but once again, I don't want to get addicted...My friends and family have noticed a more calming speaking person in this last past week and I am definitely not nervous or anxious at all!!!! I orignally went to a Neurologist due to severe headaches and he prescribed me Klonopin claiming I have a lot of stress and anxiety..It completely took my headaches away but they have found some other complications from CT's and blood tests..I was sent for 2 MRI's for the Brain(with and w/o contrast) and I'll have the results tomorrow..(but that's a whole different story..tee hee) But not to sidetrack you, but yes I will definitely let you know what the Doc says in regards to "taking it as needed" in my situation...

How are you feeling on it? And I hope it's helping you too!! I'll post tomorrow and Have a Great Day Stace!!

Hey Stace!! Just a quick lil note for my follow up with you. :)

Doc says it's ok to reduce my dosage since I was feeling a lil laa laa so I do not have to take it 3x's a day as he prescribed...I personally will take 0.5 at night then split the 0.5 in half in the morning and in the afternoon and see if it makes me less quote unquote tired....One of my friends who has panic attacks and was prescribed it too takes it only as needed when she feels anxious etc...Hope it helps ya Stacey!! Have a Wonderful Day!!

Use caution would be my advice. Even if they work well you are going to eventually get tolerant and gradually increase the dosage, which is why it would be wise to try to take it only when truly needed as others said. These meds tend to lose effectiveness over a few months where the side-effects start outweighing the negatives, especially if you have a depression issue. This isn't always the case but something you might want to know.
