undefinedundefinedundefined  I am a 43 year old female who is very concerned about my liver enzymes test results. For quite awhile my left flank area would ache but nothing was done about it until I called the Doctor one day from my office because I was happing sharp jabbing pain on my left side, consent ache and a little nausea. The doctor gave me pain pills and ran a blood test. I was told that everything was normal. A week ago I had severe aching on my left side, sharp jabbing pain and a little nausea. The ER doctor told me that my liver enzmes where very high.
My results were:
SGOT/AST was 327 normal reference is 13-35 IU/L
SGPT/ALT was 729 normal reference is 26-56 IU/L
ALK Phos was 218 normal reference is 63-127 IU/L
I was admitted to the hospital to have a abdominal ultra sound the next day that was normal. So they released me from the hospital with test results of
SGOT/AST was 249
SGPT/ALT was 591
ALK PHOS was 193
all of these are still to high but the house doctor released me since my liver enyzmes were going down.
The following week My family doctor check for Hepatitis A,B & C and they e and all was normal. However the live enzymes were not back to normal.
The 249 opn the SGOT was 215
The 591 on the SGPT/ALT was 491
The ALK PHOS was 215 from the 193 - slightly higher then the day the doctor at the hospital released me.
I'm wondering why the aching, sharp jabbing pain is on the left side of my body but the liver is on the right. My family doctor is sending me to a gastro
Doc and I have an appointment tomorrow. I'm worried. I am not a drinker and have never been. I may have a total of 6 drinks in a years time.
I would really appreciate speaking with someone who has had such test results or has medical knowledge.
I almost forgot to menition - I have alot of lower back and hip area pain but I've had that for a year or two - A year ago I had a Spinal MRI for by back pain and approximately two years ago a pelvic MRI that was fine. However, my blood test at those times were normal

Does your upper right side hurt at all? I have been diagnosed with a fatty liver, cyst on my liver, and a fatty deposit on my pancreas. Both my upper right side and upper left side constantly ache. The pancreas is what hurts on my left side. I have tried to get info on that, but have had no luck! From what I understand the fatty liver is what is causing the problems with my pancreas. I have had a lot of the same symptoms as you, the up and down liver enzymes(which I don't completely understand),the lower back pain(don't know if that is related), and I am not a drinker either. Are you overweight? I am about 40 lbs overweight, and some doc's tell me that is the problem, and some say it isn't. If I were you when you go to the GI, try to get him to do the MRI first. I have had about $2500 of tests(before the MRI) and the MRI was what gave the best info. Good luck!

No! The pain is on my left side but every once in awhile I'll feel a little tringe on my side. It's happen a couple of times today. How high were your liver enzymes? I've read alot of messages on this board and I haven't found anyone who had liver enzymes as high as mine. I have an appointment with a GI doctor tomorrow and I'm really scared.

I am not sure how high mine were, but I don't think they were that high. I wonder if you are suffering from pancrentitis(?). With your liver enzymes that high, I would think that would be a good possibility. Let us know what the GI says. Good luck and God Bless!!!

When I first got sick with Autoimmune Hepatitis, my liver emzymes were in the thousands. I was very sick though and in the hospital for 3 weeks. I had to have a liver biopsy. My illness is my immune system is attacking my liver. I would get your doctors to find the cause for your increased liver functions. They are definitly not normal. There are many reasons why they can be high. Some are as simple as some meds can cause it. Also alcohol can to. Then some reasons can be serious illnesses like mine. Good luck to you. Take care, Tina

I saw a GI specialist today and he went thru all the information provided to him from my last hospital vist last week and my PCP latest reports. He told me about the immune system attacking the liver. He ordered alot of blood test, a total of 8 tubes of blood. He plans to repeat the ultra sound the hospital did last week and set up an appointments for a colonoscopy and endoscopy and many other tests that I can't even remember the names of let alone pronounce them. I really do appreciate you writting to me. I'll let you know what happens and good luck to you also

Are you on any medicines that contain Tylenol/Acetaminophen/APAP (all the same thing, just different names)?
That can cause your liver levels to elevate, and over time damage your liver. If youre on anything that contains those medications, youre going to have to use an alternative medicine.

The only tylenol I take would be Tylenol PM at night and the doctor said that wouldn't be enough to cause the problem. Do you know if evualted liver enzmes is a systom of liver cancer? I'm really getting nervous.

Tylenol taken over a long period of time can cause liver damage. I am not sure, but I would think liver cancer would have other symptoms. But I know how you feel. When they were testing me for everything pancreatic cancer came up because of the spot on my pancreas, and while waiting on the test result to come back, I was so scared! How soon are they going to start the testing? Good luck, I will be thinking of you.

Well, they've tested my liver enzymes three times now and 2 of the 3 are coming down but they are all still way too high. I spoke to my GI specialist the other day and it looks like I'll have a colonoscopy and endocospy next week. I have a sister in town who plans to be at the hospital with me next week. My father passed away of cancer four years ago and my husband died of cancer that spread to his liver over ten years ago. So I guess you could say I'm a nervous wreck. The ache and stabbing pains I get are on the left side instead of the right side of my body but it was still the liver enzymes that were high. According to my specialist I don't have to feel the pain on my right side. But, the liver enzymes are going down (not normal by far) so maybe that's a good sign. I also found out today that a good friend of mine has a sister who was told this week that she has cancer of the liver. It's really been a bad month.
I'll let you know how it goes
Take care

Did your GI have any ideas on what this could be? I know how scary this stuff is and will be thinking of you! Good luck!

My GI doctor told me it could be a number of things like some kind of liver disease, autoimune liver disease and left it at that and of course that in itself makes me nervous. I was told that the colonoscopy and endosocpy would be done next Thursday but I found out today that they had a problem scheduling my MRI Utra sound with and without contrast so the doctors office told me that it might be done on November 1st. Naturally, I told them I didn't want to wait that long because my liver enzymes are still too high and I now hurt on both sides. My GI Doctor doesn't come in on Fridays so they had to call him. The office called back and told me that the doctor wants the MRI Ultra sound done before he'll do the colonoscopy etc. So to make a long story short, the office got a hold of a MRI specialist who might be able to get me in next Tuesday or Wednesday morning and if so the GI Doctor will do his procedures on Thursday Morning. I'm sure he has some reason why he insists on having the Ultra sound done before the rest of the tests. The pain is getting worse. I brought some of my office work home to do this weekend since it looks like I'll be missing some time from the office and maybe that will help me to concentrate on something else for awhile if the pain will back off and my mind will let go of it for awhile.
Thanks for writting and take care of yourself

I have even higher numbers and am currently a lovely shade of yellow. You left off your bilirubin levels. Are they really high also? I assume that you have already gotten a answer from your doctors by now, but my jaundice seems to have been caused by one of my prescriptions. Medical term is 'Drug-induced Cholestasis. Not sure what one did it, and I don't know when I will get better, but it lookslike I will recover. I just hope the itchiness stops soon.
