View Full Version : Docs say "reactive" hypoglycemia doesn't exist??

Do you have alot of experience with Hypoclycemia? I have been told for the 4th time in a year that there was no such thing as a chronic reactive hypoglycemia??? The doctors always say 1) hypoclycemia is either a diabetic reaction to insulin or oral meds or 2)TRUE hypoclycemia is only caused by rare pancreatic tumors or 3) I just don't eat right and anyone who has too much sugar is going to have a crash reaction and it's my own fault, so stop eating too much sugar. They also blame it on pregnancy (it is definitely worse now, but is still a problem when not PG.) A few have told me, as I've mentioned before that it could be secondary to my MVP. But Noone wants to tell me how to deal with it!

I don't eat much sugar at all. I do eat alot of carbs (I tend to pass out alot when restricting carbs. I pass out pretty easily thanks to my MVP) but I eat alot of protein which usually balances it out. Occasionally, I will still have spike/drop reactions (sugar high with vision changes after 1 hour, sharply bottoming out after that) and I have no idea when it will happen. Eating a baked potato always seems to do it, though, unless I have protien with it.

What kind of doctor do I look for??? Are there any out there who will treat this as a condition? I've been in 2 states and it's been the same thing everytime. Everyone from family practice, OB's, internists..... I'm just getting frustrated.

Hi Kellie, I have LOTS of experience with RH. I believe I commented on this in a previous post and also provided some links to threads that discuss this further. Here they are again:

If you read through these threads thoroughly you will learn a lot and get some resources that will help you.

As I mentioned, you will rarely find a doctor that recognizes or properly addresses reactive hypoglycemia, but TRUST ME, it is real. If you are seeking professional assistance with this condition, you will need to do some homework. Many dietitians and nutritional counselors do recognize this condition, but many do not. Make some calls and ask for some general info on how they approach controlling RH with diet. You might even need to look for a holistic nutritional counselor. In the mean time, the advice I offer in the above links will help and is typically the same advice you will get from a professional who has experience with RH.

I would be happy to answer any additional questions you have.
