my hair is already pretty black (by birth) but in the sun it's kinda brown, anyway im growing my hair out and was wondering if dying it black would relax my hair somehow, like close the cuticle or weigh it down some, smooth it out, i dunno. also what would be the best brand to use? im a guy by the way.

Casting shines afterwards. But be cautioned once black it is hard to change unless you get your hair stripped. my brother and I during our 'Cure' phase did it once, and while the texture was lovely we spent ages growing it out. 'Fraid I can't answer your other question. Good luck

Try using a deep conditioner.

I have a friend that died his hair black and it really takes the shine out...it may have been what he used but just a fair warning: once you go black you never go back
Good luck!!

My hair is naturally almost black, too. I dyed it pitch-black last summer, and while it looked good in the summer, when I had a bit of a tan, I looked like a corpse in the winter.

A lot of times dark brown haircolors look darker in real life than they seem on the box. If you want it to look like a natural black, use a dark brown instead. If you want it to be goth-black, use a black.

If it's your first time coloring, I'd go with a "Level 2" haircolor that washes out in a few weeks. If you hate it, it won't last forever, and if you like it, you can try something more permanent.

I agree with a couple of the other posters, depending on the length of your hair, if you dye it black and then wan't to change the colour but not cut the length you wont get rid of the black. I've never had a shine problem, no matter what i've put in my hair it's always been shiny and i only use a light weight, yet cheap hair conditioner, so i'd say shine might be an individual thing or diet related.

My hair is waist length and half is black and the other half a very dark brown, but there's no way i'm cutting it off. Besides, it's not totally obvious. I'd love to dye it black and have the bottom couple of inches in hot pink :D

I too agree with a couple of people, I have died my hair several different colors in the past. And black was one of them, let me start of by saying if your not sure get a temporary one that washes out! Like said above once you go black its VERY hard to go back. You should take your skin tone into consideration before changing your hair color it can really make you look awful (you might want to go to a salon-they are the pro's) But we warned it took me 6 hours and two different days at the salon before I got my hair back to a DARK brown...its fading out to my natural color now, but black is PERMENANT, so be careful.

Hi,
I have naturally blonde hair, and i want to go dark, almost, if not black.(please dont just tell me to stay blonde, ive been blonde and want to go dark, any help is great.) Ive dyed my hair before(mostly reds) and my blonde color could never keep the color for very long.(that was awhile ago) I know reds are harder to keep in ANY hair, but im wondering if i dye it blackish- will it start to fade soon afterwards? if so how long afterwards? What is the best dye to use for this?(i have longer, thick hair also...) thanks!

Lindsay~

I had my hair dyed dark brown, it's pretty dark but not black. The last hair dye used was Aveda and I can't believe how long it's lasted without roots showing up. I had my hair done 2 months ago and I still can't see the gray roots coming in yet and I don't see any fading. I think I'll always go to a salon that uses Aveda. You know what else was fantastic about the salon, they massaged your neck and hands while the color was processing, it was great!! I don't know if this is an "Aveda" practice or just the salons??

I died my hair black once, and I just used a semi-permanent. It took sooo long to come out, I practically had to wait for it to grow out! I liked the black while I had it, but I got sick of it after a while and just wanted my brown hair back. My hair stayed a quite dark brown for a year or so after the black hair dye went away, with none of my previous sun highlights or anything, and I don't think it was as nice.

I dyed my hair black several years ago and hated it. I had light brown hair and dyed it dark brown- it turned jet black! If this is what you want- great! I didn't, but I bought Neutrogena clarifying shampoo and it faded it dramatically. I think the trick was washing it a lot the next day with that shampoo! I hate the shampoo because it dries my hair, but it's perfect for fading unwanted color!

Lindsay, my medium blonde hair doesn't hold any dark colors very well. Reds faded to brassy in no time, and brown faded to yucky dark blonde too. I've never tried dark, but I think for my hair it would be the same thing as red or brown. I'm sure you would keep some of the color, (I did) but the pretty stuff would wash out leaving me with this flat blaah leftover permanent stuff.

I don't know how healthy this is, but one time I decided to go red after having my hair bleached platinum for a year or so. When I got sick of the red, I tried to get some highlights so I could grow it out, the red absolutely WOULD NOT come out even with double volume bleach, especially at the ends. My hairstylist said it was because I had bleached all the natural pigment out of my hair, so the red really bonded to it. However, I don't know if I'd recommend doing this unless you want to stay dark for a long time. Because trying to get that red out (for my wedding) really fried my hair! I just had to leave it alone and cut it every 3 weeks or so until all the color and the damage grew off.

if you're going for goth black just to try it for a while.... "manic panic" has a black black in their semi permenant tubs.. I found those wash out in about a month and a half.. but you can use a clarifying shampoo to make non permenant dyes wash out much faster

i wasn't GOING for any particular look. i just want my hair to be REALLY REALLY soft and shiny. i thought maybe that the dye would help weigh it down n maybe help keep it less wavy. i want to be able to run my hands through my hair and not have to worry about it messing up cuz it's stiff.

That's weird- I have an opposite affect with black hair dye: it won't stay in my hair at all. My hair's naturally very dark brown (almost black) and I've tried dying it a midnight black by Feria (loved the sparkly blue shine in the sun) and then a different normal black (by Clairol)... both which are supposed to be permanents. Both of them just washed out and I looked like a squid whenever I touched water for weeks afterwards :(

It did make my hair feel really soft and relaxed though WHILE it was in... ah well... ;)

have you hit the hair styling products in a big drug store lately? there are ALOT of recent inovations out on the market now, alot especially for men.. there are alot of new pomades and holding lotions that will leave your hair silky and manageable without making it crispy.. might ask the barber/stylist when you get your hair done next time.. they might be able to make some suggestions as to what you should use depending on your hair/style type and what you want it to do

ok i decided i want to go black, Im going to try that manic panic first, to see if i like it( its a semi perm.) and if i do, i was wondering if you could give me some names of permanent jet black hair dyes that wont fade out unless they are grown out (particularly for nautral blonde hair) any info is great! also should i maybe considering bleaching it before i dye it with the permanent stuff( if i decide i like black.)
thanks!

I have dark brown hair with pink streaks and tips, which i first bleached. I've had it like this for a while and am ready for a change. I was thinking of dying it blacl black with pink tips, but after reading the comments on black hair, I'm not so sure. I don't want my hair to be dull, or fade form the black, or not be able to change it. I have long-ish hair and I'm not interesteed in cutting it any shorter than shoulder length, so growing it out would take forever. I don't want to have brown hair, i don't want it how it is now, I think i would look bad as a blonde, and I've been red before. What should I do???

Sally's beauty supply carries a brand called colorgloss that is non-damaging and adds serious shine. the colors turn out dark, though, so choose a shade 2 shades lighter than your desired shade. if you want black hair, using the dark brown color will be black without being too black. its fairly subtle if you leave it in for the recommended 15 minutes, but if you leave it in longer, it'll be more intense. since the color is non-damaging, leaving it in longer did not dry out my hair at all. i dyed my hair dark brown earlier this summer, and left the color (dark blonde) in for an hour, and it turned out REALLY dark. it freaked me out at first, but it lightened enough that i liked the color. anyway, try this.

Ok so could someone sum up my question? What will get my long hair to stay black permently?(or at least a long time, to where id have to grow it out.) ( keep in mind also i am blonde naturally, and it doesnt like to hold color, so i need something that will stay a long time.)

Thanks in advance
