My 2 1/2 yr old was running in mc donalds the other day and fell face first into the plastic benches the eating tables attach to...cutting the inside of her upper lip pretty badly. It swelled a little at the time, but by the next day her lip is VERY swollen around the cut and bruised on the outside of her mouth(cheek) opposite the cut...she says her mouth doesnt hurt...what are warning signs I should look for signaling I should seek medical help?

I would report this to the McDonalds that you were at. Did any of the employees see it happen? They should have filled out a report on this. Then I would definatley take the baby to a doctor, at McDonald's expense, just to make sure that she is alright. Better to be safe than sorry.
Good Luck!

I would check tthe teeth to make sure that they are not loose or that they have not been forced back up into the gums. If there is only bruising and no infection then everything is probably ok. My child has had a couple of accidents similar to this. Both times his dentist wanted to see him. They did x-rays to make sure there was no damage to the teeth of gums. Everything was fine. Trouble chewing or sucking from a sippy cup or sucking a pacifier (if one is used) would indicate a problem and I would call the dentisit.

Why in the world would you charge McDonalds for the doctors visit?? Its not thier fault the child tripped, lol. Its actions like that that make a lot of merchandise pricing go sky high. But thats my opinion.

Well I paid for the doctor visit. Then I wrote mc Donalds a letter explaining what happened. The offered to pay the doctor bill and sent me a letter of apology and a bunch of free sandwich cards...She slipped on some water or something on the floor. The entire dining area was dirty, not a clean table in it, yet there werent any customers there either. When she fell, it was brought to the attention of an employee who did nothing to help. I believe McDonalds did the right thing in paying the 88 dollar doctor bill, and the apology was appreciated. The store is liable in this situation, if I had sued for a gazillion dollars that wouldve been wrong, but letting them pay her doctor bill is entirely appropriate.

In this situation, you were justified. If she fell because of something the store was directly responsible for (water in the floor) they should be liable. If she had just stumbled over her feet or something that was an accident prone child thing, holding them responsible would've been wrong IMO. But this was their fault.
Anyway, my son has had so many face injuries due to just being too active for his own good. I was told to check for loose/broken teeth, excessive bleeding that won't stop on it's own and could need stitches (mouth injuries are bad to bleed anway and can be easily reaggravated and caused to bleed again. This is normal.) mental changes, or bad swelling/bruising or inability to move his mouth like something could be broken. At this point I'd think it's just going to be a long slow healing process. Most symptoms of serious injury 9bone breaks, concussion) are evident right away or within the 1st 24 hours.

Well I didnt get her to the doctor until a day after it happened. The doctor said she wouldve needed stitches, but didnt want to suture the inside of her mouth after the time had passed due to infection. I think at times, when shes tired or just woke up, her lip sags a bit on the side it was cut. (her teeth cut the inside of her upper lip but didnt break the skin on the outside). But my mother and wife both tell me im imagining it.

I took my kids to a public pool and my daughter who was 3 slid down the baby slide and into their pool and she went down and twisted somehow and it literally ripped her tooth root and all out of her little mouth. I never recieved an apoligy, a free pass to the pool....NOTHING! So now my child has no front tooth. great huh? At least you got a free sandwich! lol

No offense, but why should they have givin you anything for her taking out her tooth? I feel bad that it happend, dont get me wrong. My baby cousins have had thier fair share of accidents in public places also. But I wouldnt expect to be givin anything because they fall, or trip, or hit thier head. Accidents happen and unless the pool slide was defective then the accident had nothing to do with the public pool owners. I hate when people try to use anything (espescially when its accidental, or thier own fault. EX: Lady the sued McDonalds because she spilled hot coffee on herself and got burned... you're gonna get burned... coffee is hot!) they can to get something for free.. whether it's a free pass to something or suing for a million dollars.

Soulcatcher, I am curious as to why you think the people at the public pool owe you money, or even an apology? Based on your description of this event, it is an accident, pure and simple. Just because you are on someone else's property doesn't mean that they are liable for your (or your children's) well being.

Ami72 - Thank you! I am so happy I'm not the only one feeling that way, lol.

No problem skyhigh! I find it odd that if someone is injured, they automatically want to find someone to blame. Sure, sometimes someone IS to blame, but more often than not, it is an accident. I guess we have an overly litigious culture though, but it sure is nice to know that others agree with me on this! ;)
