I was diagnosed with crohn's diease back in January of 2004 after a period of being extremly sick.. I am now seeing two specialists, they have put me on prednisone, pentasa, imuran, renitidine, calcium supplememnts, and vitamin D supplements. Lately I have been taking the time to research the meds and from what I have learned I do not want to take them anymore.. since getting out of he hospital in Feb. I have gained almost 60 pounds. On top of that my doctor uped my meds, even though i wasn't feeling ill, and since then i have started to feel like it is all coming back. I am scared, and my doctors won't listen to me, they tell me that meds are the only way, and it is too risky to come off of them. I am ready to just stop them all together cold turkey...get sick again and start over. And to add one more thing in to the mix, i am becoming depressed i am constantly down and all I want to do is sleep, but I am ashamed to tell anyone and i am afraid they will just try to give me more meds..grrrrrrr....... what i really need is for someone to help me find a good specialist that will listen to me and help me through this.. i don't mind taking some meds, but not to te extreme. DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY GOOD SPECIALISTS ANYWHERE.. I AM WILLING TO TRAVEL AND I AM WILLING TO PAY... PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME... I AM AT MY WITS END WITH THIS BLOODY DISEASE.. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED... THANX

Heres something i read:
Alot of typing... I hope something in it will be helpful in some way.

Because the colon is responsible for absorbing the nutrients essential to good health, anything that compromises the colon's capacity for this job also compromises health. Certain nutrients can only be absorbed in the bowel, and, not coincidentally, are found to be deficient in colon patients.
Dr. McClave found that two thirds to three quarters of patients hospitalized with Crohn's disease are severely malnourished. He found a deficiency of protein to be most common in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. In patients with colitis, he found incredible deficiencies in essential nutrients that can make the difference between health and healing. Over half - 54 to 67 percent - were deficient in folic acid; 48 to 50 percent were deficient in vitamin B12; half were deficient in zinc; and an incredible 75 percent of patients with colitis were deficient in vitamin D. Patients with Crohn's disease had even greater nutritional imbalances. He also found colon patients had trouble absorbing fat, and excreted high amounts of calcium, magnesium and zinc, making them deficient in these minerals. Dr. Seidman found that two thirds of all Crohn's disease patients are potentially at risk for vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin E levels have also been shown to be lower in Crohn's disease patients, as well as deficiencies in iron, calcium, magnesium and vitamin K.

Not only are certain amino acids essential to a healthy colon, but they can reverse the effect of food allergies, infection and other trauma to the delicate mucosal tissues of the intestinal tract. A deficiency of glutamine will weaken intestinal villi, causing poor absorption of nutrients, so obviously your intestine's health depends on it. An article in Gastroenterology stated that a glutamine-enhanced diet helps the colon recover from colitis by increasing good guy bacteria. In animal studies glutamine supplementation has decreased weight loss, improved nitrogen retention, and increased colonic thickness, protein and DNA content, as well as improving survival time and decreasing mortality from Chrohn's disease.
Arginine is another amino acid found to help colon problems. It enhances the immune system, especially following trauma, and pro-motes wound healing and intestinal cell growth. Look for a complete amino acid formula in your neighborhood health food or vitamin store.

Your in my prayers!
