Well,
I felt like I had diarrhea colicky pain for about 5 straight hours last night, without the diarrhea. Nausea, a little sweating, but not unbearable. An hour in, I took Pepto Bismol, convinced it was diarrhea.

I still managed to go out shopping with my wife, though I was quiet and irritable, and every bump in the road made me just feel like I wanted to throw up.

I said I felt "poisoned." No pain in the back. Just in the lower abdomen. I tried to use the toilet at the store because I thought it was gas or diarrhea, but nothing came out except clear urine.

30 mins later, I tried going again, no diarrhea came out or gas........... except for STRAIGHT BLOOD in my urine. WHOA!!!! NEVER seen anything like that in my 29 years!

I headed home and gradually felt considerably better in 30 minutes or so. Drank tons of water on the way home and went into the ER.

After a urinalysis, of course, blood in the urine. Though I have to say I kept having to go because of all the water I drank on the way, and the blood gradually lessened to where the urine was nearly clear.

They did bloodwork and a CT scan. 2 hours later, the doc comes in and says "I think you passed a stone, and there is 2 small ones still in your right kidney." He kept looking at me funny that I refused pain meds. After all, the pain was not TERRIBLE.

1. If this was a stone, why didn't my back hurt?

2. Why wasn't the pain SEVERE like it is said to be? Granted, my pain tolerance is high, but I can tell when something really is supposed to be painful.

3. Is there ANYTHING to drink that can bust these up? I know cranberry prevents them, but how can I help disolve them?

Well, guess I have to pass 2 more, if they are anything like that. no big deal. But is this typical for a kidney stone?

If you never had any SEVERE pain through all of that, you are a lucky man! I have had 2 very small kidney stones and the pain was very bad. Everything you are describing does sound like a kidney stone though. I dont think there is any way you can bust them up yourself. Your doctor may not bust them up for you unless they are too big to pass on their own.

The only explanation I can think of as to why you werent doubled over in pain is that the kindey stone was extremely small.

Actually the size doesn't make the pain worse, it is more the shape. Rounded stones do not cause as much pain as stones that have sharp edges. The larger the stone the more complications you are likely to have. My 9 year old daughter went through almost exactly what you are going through but this occurred for her every 3 months for a year before they figured out it was kidney stones, you see they don't expect children to have stones so it was the last thing they checked. Her pain usually didn't start until it was in her "ribs" as she put it. Usually the day before the blood, she would be uncomfortable all over, as the stone got closer to passing the pain became easier to locate because it became increasingly worse. She would be playing and then double over clenching her stomach, much like gas pains but worse. It never did hurt her to actually pass the stone which was odd to me, with all that blood I figured it must burn, but she said it didn't. Her urine didn't even look like urine, it looked like pure blood, almost black. It was really scary.

What you need to do is see a nephrologist (kidney specialist) and find out what type of stones you have. That can be done by a simple 24 hour urinalysis. Then after you know what types of stones you have they will put you on a diet and maybe even medication to prevent more stones. My daughter has oxalate stones which means no salt, pepper, chocolate ect. And drink lots of water. My daughter has to drink 60 oz a day!! She also has to take medications but the Dr said that once her diet really starts working she can stop taking the meds. She has been taking the medication, chlorthalidone and potassium citrate, for over a year now and has not had one stone pass. With her passing them every 3 months before treatment, it has been wonderful for her not to have any.

Please keep us posted.
