My dad has been in the hospital for the last two going on three months. He went in for a complex surgery on his side. To summarize things: he had to have three unexpected major surguries. Today I noticed that his pulse rate is 121 but his blood pressure is 95/56. Is this something that I should be worried about. He has not been out of bed since Friday. Friday he went for a walk around the nurses station but then back to bed. He usually runs low blood pressure and low pulse rate. Please help.

I would really give the hospital staff a quiz. Start by asking about the monitoring equipment. Is it all hooked up right, ie are the BP and heart rate readings valid? This is not a good sign. Ask his doctors if any medications, or complications are causing his heart to become weakened, or appear to be weakened. When the heart is failing, the brain responds by increasing the the heart rate. If the heart is weak, it cannot maintain normal BP. Maybe medicines are causing this, but if his heart is beating that fast, his BP should be normal, if his heart is normal. Hope he gets better soon.
