Hello, I was just diagnosed with Diverticulosis after having a Colonoscopy done yesterday. For those who never had one or is planning to have one, it is the easiest thing you can ever have done. No pain, no after affects. In fact I felt alot better after I had it done then before. Anyway, I still do have some pain in my lower abdomen and of course the Gastro said fiber, fiber and more fiber. I plan on taking some Metimucel and of course I'll eat fiber. My question is if I stay with that course will the pain subside as well as will the iverticulosis actually "reverse" itself and become more healthy?

thanks,

Robert

Unfortunately, I don't think it reverses . . . but I have "met" people online who have had no recurrence for many years by making dietary changes. Diligence is the key, I believe. Don't ever let things "slow down". I like getting fiber from food . . . mostly veggies and fruits and legumes since I get some irritation from too much whole grain. I do better with some raw foods every day; regular yogurt; plenty of water; and I think exercise helps, too.

FYI, when mine was diagnosed, I was already in need of emergency surgery and had a colon resection. So my effected area was cut out, letting me start with a clean slate. About 18 months after surgery there was no recurrence . . . and I get my next follow-up pretty soon.

Oh, WARNING, increase your fiber intake GRADUALLY . . . and after the pain has subsided (are you on a low fiber, semi-liquid diet now?).

Thanks for the info. I am not on any specifc diet currently. Should I be on a certain one. I was going to gradually add more fiber into the diet and see if that helps. Currently I still have some bloating and gas (could be still from the colonoscopy) and some pain in the lower abdomen.

When you mentioned pain, I thought you might be in the midst of a diverticulitis attack . . . but now that I think about it, you probably wouldn't have had a colonoscopy with that going on. If the cramping is from the colonoscopy, that ought to be gone in a day or two and would not interfer with adding fiber.
