Hello,

I am visiting some relatives and my 14 yr old nephew is quite interested in my Diabetes. He has asked me alot of questions, so I finally checked his sugar. I hour after meal it was 165, then this morning I checked it first thing before anything to eat, it was 110. What does that mean? Is it high?

Thank You,
Sandy

The Joslin Clinic lists the desired ranges for a non-diabetic to be less than 110 before breakfast. Take into consideration that your meter may be off a few points.

Also, a reading 2 hours after a meal should be less than 140 so you may want to check him at that time. I would think that a reading in the 160's would be normal only an hour after eating.

Hope that helps.

Good advice, Linda. But I would definitely check his AM fasting readings a few more times. He may have the beginnings of impaired glucose tolerance (otherwise known as insulin resistance), and if so, it's important for him to get a handle on this now.

If he has a couple of AM fasting readings that are below 110, I wouldn't worry too much.

Ruth
