Just got back from the Urologist. Had him look at the fissure. The exam was the most painful thing I've ever been through.
He found 2 fissures. One on top and a smaller one on bottom. Has anyone had this happen?
I was also give a prescription for Diltiazam to take for 6 weeks.

Chiggens,
I answered your last post under treatments for fissures about the lazer treatment. Did you talk to your doc about it? You may not need it though with the diltiazem. Apply it after a warm bath. This might sound gross, but apply a big glob of vaseline on your anus right before a bm. It helps you not to tear.

The urologist said it couldn't be lasered shut. The only other option was to cut the sphincter muscle -which I don't want to do.
Well, I have 6 weeks on Diltiazam, so I guess I'll see how that goes. Botox might be another option.
My philosophy is, if I have a propensity ofr fissures, I don't want to be having surgery every year. I need to manage this in a conservative manner.
I'm just bummed I have 2 of them :(

Chiggens,
My doctor says it is possible to take care of this with diet. You could very well take care of this on your own. There was a web site all about fissures and home cures, I will try to remember it.The key to healing this though is to keep your stool soft. Abou the surgery, I might be wrong but I think once the muscle is cut, there is a high percentage that you won't get fissures again. Wonder why your doc said it could not be lasered ? But then again my colorectal surgeon said the same thing and I found a doc that would do it. It was actually a hemmorhoid relief center who used laser. But I agree with you, do everything you can first before you do surgery. If that doesn't work and botox doesn't and you have a terrible amount of pain then I don't know what you should do. If you decide to have surgery just find a good colorectal surgeon. When I talked to mine about surgery and my concerns of incontinence, she said she only had 1 person that happened to and it was only temporary. But I'm betting on the cream, lots of water & fiber and warm baths!Good luck :)

I had the same thing happen to me a couple of years ago I had one large and it was very painful I started off with suppositories that worked for a little while then went to creams it also worked for a little while. Then I got tired of almost crying everytime I went to bathroom (which is 4 to 5 times a day) so I had the surgery, what a relief I have not had any problems since. It is not very painful at all no worse than you already feel. Mine has been done for 3 years I havent had any trouble since. You ought to rethink surgery.

The Diltiazam is like a miracle drug! I started taking it, and within 24 hours, my symptoms were down 60%. After 4 days, I feel virtually 100%, with no tearing or bleeding during a bowl movement. I try not to get too optimistic, but it looks like this thing is going to clear up.
I've also been using Balneol cream, which is like a cleansing agent for your backside, after each BM. In addition to this, I sometimes use Vaseline if I have a big BM.
I was really lucky to find a doctor who uses this medication. he has also added something else to it. I had to go to a special pharmacy to get it.
I feel like a human being again :)

Chiggens,
That is wonderful! I told you it was good stuff! :bouncing: I had to go to a special pharmacy also. Use it as long as the doc told you to, don't stop when YOU think the fissure is healed. Keep up with the vaseline and warm baths, doc says to make sure you stay very clean! This is great news, I am glad for you.
WATCHOUT!

If you are in that much pain, get the surgery..I just had my sphinter muscle cut, an external skin tag removed and the huge deep fissure I had (torn down to the muscle) fixed just two days ago..the pain was so minimal and I can finally go to the bathroom with practiclaly no pain..I was like this for almost three months. I couldn't take it any longer. If you give yourself a month and your not better...definitely rethink the surgery...just find a specialist...the lady who did mine was absolutley wonderful. I was out shopping the next day and am finally getting my life back! Good Luck but have hope...YOU can get better....
