What is toner and when should it be applied? Does it make that much of a difference? I don't wear makeup, but am suffering sun damage to the face as I spend a lot of time outdoors (sports and recreation). I use sunblock when outdoors and moisturizer before bed. I was given a bottle of toner and am not sure what to do with it.

If you have oily skin, then you may want to use it. But if you have dry skin, there is no need for toner. Your skin needs some natural oil in it so as not to screw up the natural pH.

It's good to use after you've exfoliated and before applying any moisturizers or makeups. I agree that dry skin doesn't really need it...I have drier skin and use it on occasion....when I feel oilier and need a lift (it can be quite refreshing).

Thank you for your replies. Why not use toner if skin is dry? Is toner astringent? My face is usually slightly oily, but much more so after exercise because of my excessive sweating and sunblock.

Yes, Alex, toner is like an astringent.

Yeah but doesn't toner have less alcohol in it than astringint?

I'm not sure about that. I would think the ones that are for "oily skin" would have the most alcohol, but I'm not at all certain. The only astringent type thing that I've ever used is Witch Hazel.

It's much more diluted than astringent...at least, the kind I use.
Much more gentle too. I use astringent when my face is really oily or breaking out. I use toner when I want my face to feel fresh and clean and it just needs a little "balancing".

I like Paula's Choice Toner for Oily Skin. It isn't an astringent. It's just a really nice, light moisturizer. It gets rid of that last trace of oil and dead skin that my cleaner missed.

You need a toner wether or not you have oily or dry skin. There are levels of strength to a toner. A toner takes off excess dead skin and clarifys in your pours. I use Clinique level 3 toner, but someone that has dry skin would use level 1.

I don't know about "need". I doubt the application of toner has had much effect on the human race.
