I've seen a lot of people ask about prescriptions for GERD and persistent heartburn--sometimes they work great, but they generally mask symptoms, not heal the problems that are causing the symptoms.
I too have had acid spells where the acid backed up into the back of my mouth. I was terribly afraid to go back to sleep because of it happening again. I had this happer 3-4 times over the course of two weeks. I got on the internet for awhile (it seems like 4-5 days straight) and finally found something that helped me (still in the process of recovery). I DID get rid of all the acid within a week or so, though. Please read this post all the way to the bottom-I found something that works very well.
If you are having these symptoms, you may have GERD (Gastro-Esophygeal Reflux Disease). I had had GERD for several years and kept it under control with zantac, then later, aciphex. I am still on aciphex and am trying to get off this. I will try to get off for good by the end of the year.
I did some research and found out that my system was very acidic. Most diets these days are very acidic. Caffeine and alcohol also contribute. There are test kits you can get (detailed below) to test your pH. Your urine should be between 6-8.5--my urine was off the scale (below 5) for the first week that I took these capsules. Your body tries to keep the blood slightly alkaline (pH ~7.2) and how it does this is by shuttling waste products to other parts of the body (if it can't excrete or neutralize them). Normally, these products are eliminated, but when your body becomes ultra-acidic, the body essentially loses its ability to get rid of these waste products, and they get stored in other parts of the body, including the muscles and other tissue. I had problems with muscle weakness and general fatigue.
One set of capsules are homeopathic--essentially tissue salts to help neutralize the pH of the body, the other is concentrated vegetable matter, which is basic. I have no vested interest in having anyone try these--I just was like some of you who had real problems with acid and heartburn symptoms.
One other thing--I have had to give up coffee. It tears my stomach up--even decaffeinated. Luckily, I can still drink beer. (But both of these still make the body go acidic.)
Check out these links--you can order online. Try it. It worked for me. I've been on them now for close to six months and I feel great!
Homeopathic remedy--I used this one exclusively for about 3 months.
There is also some really good info on this site about balancing your pH, and what pH imbalance can do to your body:
www.bufferph.com or
do a search for buffer pH.
Greens (concentrated vegetable matter, capsules):

Good luck and God Bless.
