I am one of those lucky people with very dry skin. During the winter time my scalp gets very itchy and I have flakes. I have used Head and Shoulders Intensive Treatment and I just bought Selsun Blue. Can anyone recommend any good dandruff shampoos or other remedies for drandruff?
Thanks :-)

Try a shampoo/conditioner that contains tea tree oil.

I'm not sure about shampoos, but Neutrogena has a spray (it's in a blue bottle) that you spray on your scalp @ night. It works for me, and I don't have to use a different shampoo. (I only use it as needed) Good luck!

i have the same problem, oily hair/ dry scalp. what works for me is aveda. i use the rosemary mint shampoo by aveda. and then they have this stuff called scalp remedy that you put on your scalp. i only use it at night. put it on and let it set. when i first started using it i used it every night for a few days, then only when my head got itchy. now i only have to use it like once a month. but i think it may have to do with the shampoo too. i ran out of the shampoo once and used another type of shampoo for one day and my scalp went nuts and itched so bad that i had scabs on it later. now i just stick with the rosemary mint shampoo and the scalp remedy when i need it, and i make sure i never run out. it's been working now for almost a year.
good luck

Try Nizoral shampoo. My dandruff got sooooo bad, I was scratching my poor scalp to death. I had tried Head & Shoulder, Selsun blue, other ointments to ward off the flakes, but nothing helped. I finally went to my doctor and she wrote a prescription for Nizoral. They sell it in stores, but she wrote a presciption so I would get the strong stuff. You must leave on for 5 minutes. This worked wonders for me. I have not run out of the prescription yet, but I will try the OTC strength when this runs out. Pricey stuff, but hey it works for me. Good luck.

Actually if any of you have oily hair plus a dry scalp, some of you probably do not really have the dry scalp. You see, oil makes flakes just as much as a dry scalp, actually it can make more. It's usually known as seborheic (sp?) dermatitis. Your scalp gets so oily that it clumps up the skin and makes flakes and can itch and so it looks dry and feels dry, but it really is oily.

nizoral worked best for me in combination with loreal fresh vive.. (super clarifying) I only had to use the nizoral anymore if I left my hair wet over night (that REALLY irritates it) but NOW... I moved to garnier fructis... and while my hair is *extremely* shiney and silky.... my greasy dandruf is back in FULL force and the nizoral isn't touching it without the clarifying.... *sigh* AND my skin is going crazy now for some reason.... why can't things just be... oh I dunno... simple?

Has anyone heard of rinsing your hair with Listerine or cider vinagear? I just did a search on home remedies for dandruff and a quite a few of them mentioned this.

I use tea tree oil mixed with olive/jojoba oil on the scalp with a qtip. Pour it in a small cup and keep dipping the qtip in and make little parts throughout your hair to get it on. I will put a towel on the pillow and sleep like that. Tea tree shampoo by Desert Essence and Giovanni (both health food store brands) work very well. Mine seems to itch esp. once I get out of the shower. I tried rx's, the drugstore ones, pro salon stuff (I am a licensed cosmetologist so I can get my hands on those easy and know alot about them). Some people are sensitive to the ingredients in shampoos whether they are sodium laureth sulfate or another surfactant (the stuff that grabs the oil/dirt and removes it) try different brands of shampoos. The tea tree oil is very very very good stuff. Look in health food stores or online for some.

Like someone else said on here the tea tree oil really works! Mix it with your normal shampoo, just make sure you give the bottle a good shake before you use it (the oil seems to sit at the top of the bottle). I have found that it did not leave my hair feeling greasy at all. The best thing in the world is just plain old normal vinager for a final rinse. It's cheap and works really well. Hope this helps you out!

Getting deep conditioning treatments definately helps dry scalp. I have terrible dry scalp and it does wonders. I like to use Redken Deep Fuel. I put it in my hair and usually put like a plastic grocery bag or something to keep the heat in. You can leave it on as long as you like, even over night. Cholesterol really helps with dry scalp also, you can get it at beauty supply stores for a very decent price. It just doesn't smell that great, but I think it works the best.

For those interested, I have been doing the Listerine thing for about a week now. It seems to be working. I don't see any flakes and my head doesn't itch as much. After I am finished shampooing and conditioning I dump 2 capfuls of Listerine on my head. Make sure you cover your eyes if you try it. It gives your head that very cool/tingling feeling. It feels good. Then I rinse it out. My hair smells a little bit minty (I use the Blue Mint kind) but it's not noticeable unless you put your nose up to my head hahahaha. I think it cleans your scalp and gets all of the oil out. Kind of like a facial toner.
I also read while researching this that Listerine prevents head lice. My aunt actually does this with her 2 kids and they have never had head lice. Just a heads-up for you parents out there.

I don't think Scope would work. Listerine kills germs and is drying, that is why it helps drandruff. Dandruff is a fungus and is produced by excess oil on your head. I think Scope is just a breath-freshener, not a cleaner.
I shampoo (Selsun Blue) rinse it out, conidition, rinse it out, and then I take 2 cupfulls of Listerine and dump it over my head. I tilt my head back just a LITTLE bit (I want to sit on my scalp, not just run down my back). I also put my hand on my forehead so it doesn't run in my eyes. Then I usually shave my armpits or soap my body up, so it has a few seconds to sit there. Then I just rinse it out. It actually feels pretty good, a cooling feeling. It works. I don't see any flakes on my head and it only itches a little bit during the day.

I would try treating it internally, too. My husband started taking 5-10 grams of Pantothenic Acid daily (WAY more than the RDA, but it's okay, it's water soluable, your body flushes what it doesn't need), and his dandruff cleared up, along with acne and itchy scalp. Was really quite a miracle. And, so cheap, it's a cheap supplement. Only took about 3 days to see results.

If you don't have oily hair and have dry scalp (it's a different kind of dandruff than the oily kind) over the counter Nizoral AD works well. I went to a dermatologist because I am pregnant and I'd never had trouble with dandruff before. He gave me a few sample sizes of presciption strength Nizoral and I bought the over the counter stuff too. It's a little pricey but well worth the results if dry scalp (non-oily hair) is your problem. He told me Nizoral is an anit-yeast treatment which really helps. The key is to leave it on for at least 5-10 minutes so it gets a chance to work. He also told me to use a quality moisturizing shampoo and conditioner inbetween episodes.
Good luck to everyone!

Try Medidan at the beauty supply store. It stops and flakes and the itch. Once you have no more flakes, etc., just use it once a week to keep any thing from returning.

I have a question. I'm having a really bad dandruff problem right now and I need to colour my hair(I usually color every 1-2 months). With all the flaking going on, do you think coloring my hair will irritate my scalp?

Yes, esp. if you scratch. It will burn very bad and usually intensify the dandruff. I would wait or try an off the scalp technique like a cap or foil highlight to hide the roots. Esp. when scalp is broken or irritated you have a higher chance of allergic reaction. I dont recommend you color at this time.

thanks for the advice.
I think I will put off coloring my hair for now. I just started using Nizoral shampoo last week so hopefully things will improve.

If you can I have found that a tea tree shampoo (what is working for me is NaturesGate-found at health stores) or the Aubrey organics Sea Buckthorn leave in conditioner (left on the scalp)esp. soothing if you get the extreme itchies after shower. I had no luck with nizoral - I think my prob. may be the ezzcema or psoaisis not the regular dandruff.

Hi Daisy! I use the anti-dandruff Fructis shampoo and I'm very happy with the results. I use it every day with a conditioner (Aussie 3-min Miracle) on the ends and I haven't had the flakies I was plagued with for years - even with the Head and Shoulders brands. I used to worry about wearing dark colors but that's a thing of the past now. Hope this helps! :D
