I really haven't dated for 6-7 years, and only one guy before that for ten years. I'm 41. Do men nowadays expect girls to be bald or close to it down there?
I get horrible itching when I cut that hair close, and I thought that that hair serves to protect you against friction during sex or from clothing, I can't imagine not having any, I think it would hurt. I wouldn't mind doing it I guess if I (emphasis there)or my guy really thought it was great of our OWN idea BUT, I think this trend comes from so much porn out there and that men want women to look like a porn star. Despite what it sounds like LOL I'm NOT a prude at all.. but I don't want be drastically uncomfortable because my guy is programmed to think all women should look like porn stars. any thoughts??

I only shave the sides and leave a strip. It's up to you. Unless you wax (which is incredibly painful and expensive), you won't get a close enough shave. If you shave, then you probably should do it everyday, because it can be painful to shave stubble down there. I think it really depends on the guy. Some like it there and htink its sexy and some really like it bald. It's up to you really because it will take lots of maintenance.

A lot of guys are quite happy with women keeping the hair trimmed short and the bikini line area clean of hair by either waxing, shaving, tweezering etc. This should satisfy your partner and it's lower maintenance than removing the entire lot all the time.
Mine is never the same so my husband never knows what to expect. I like to surprise him from time to time. I do all my own waxing and i include my husband when i need assitance to give the hair a super close trim with the hair clippers. He enjoys this for some reason!!

I also shave the sides and leave a strip, but keep the lower half completely bald for hygiene reasons. If you do shave on a daily basis and are prone to razor burn and bumps, I highly suggest using a mens shaving cream. I dont know why this hasnt hit me before, but the mens stuff really pays attention to the razor burn; i guess because men have to shave everyday and need to worry about bumps since its on their face!! LOL!
Just a little suggestion from a fellow shaver http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif
Good luck and have fun with it!

I take it all off and painlessly once I learned my lesson. Don't get a regular shaver anywhere near there. If you really want to go bare. Trim first with small scissors, then use the electric Lady Fair to trim even closer, then the Midas Touch 8000. It sounds like alot the first time, but after that I just use the Midas twice a day (before I get out of bed and after I go to bed). It takes about 5 minutes total. I'm actually very pleased with it although it was my guy's idea.

I totally agree with you, sanibelle! I'm 35 and old enough to remember when the women in Playboy still had pubic hair. It's interesting how men's preference for women shaving their pubic area has mirrored the rise of internet porn. I think it's great if a woman wants to do it, but I find it interesting that increasingly, the things that men find attractive are harder and harder for women to achieve and further and further away from our natural state (i.e., huge boobs, tiny waist and butt, long thin legs, and total lack of body hair). It seems a little oppressive to me, not to mention a lot of maintenance! Shaving twice a day???? Sheesh, I have a life!
I'm married but I often shudder to think what would happen to me if I were suddenly single again. From what I have read, yes, most men like it totally bald or nearly bald. My advice would be just to use a scissors or trimmer to trim it short to begin with. Then if you get into a relationship with somebody you can "experiment" a bit more. Chances are if you are dating guys close to your own age or older, they are at least aware of the fact that women actually do have pubic hair and won't be shocked or repulsed by the sight of it. In fact, they may even remember the days when it was considered sexy to have hair down there, since the earliest images of naked women they looked at when they were in their teens had pubic hair. I'd be afraid that an older guy (35 or older) might think I was trying to hard if I had it all shaved off for our very first sexual encounter (unless he has been sleeping around with a lot of younger women recently).
Anyway, I'm sure I will get bashed by the younger gals for stereotyping or generalizing, but I don't mean to offend anyone! That's just the reasoning process I think I personally would use if I found myself in the dating market at my age. It's probably not applicable to a lot of other people, particularly younger gals or women living in more metropolitan areas. I'm just a little old lady from the midwest with some old-fashioned views! Good luck on the dating scene! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif

The midas is an electric razor but it is round and made specifically for shaving that area. You move it in a circular motion and I mean it can be used ANYWHERE. It is very gentle but works really well.

it doesn't hurt at all... contrary to what you might think (well.. I suppose it would hurt if you cut yourself.. but thats really not the idea.. ) but I found that it's ALOT better for hygeine... periods are easier to maintain (sorry guys.. I know thats gross) alot cleaner... and for whatever reason the hair absorbs ALOT of smell... even if I get really sweaty working out now.. no smell
I think the main trick is trimming first and only shaving the top *with* hair growth.. it's too irritating and causes razor rash if you shave against the growth on the top... but the actual lips you can go against.... and there are alot of lotions now specifically for that region so even if you do try it and get irritated... they make it completely numb
the mach 3 turbo with anti friction coating is also *the* best razor out there for this or anything... and I've found if I use my bf's norelco with the spinning heads.. I can go against the grain on top with no irritation

Ok, first let me say that you should do what YOU are comfortable with!
Now, I go completely bare. I have to tell you that at first, you will get terrible razor burn, but I have been doing it so long that it is really smooth and virtually problem free. Newbies be sure to trim first with scissors.
And, believe it or not, I use a men's razor----Mach 3!Make sure you use a new blade.
I use that and shaving gel (make sure you do it right from the bath or shower so your skin is wet and hair is softer). Use short razor strokes.
Then, when I'm done, right out of the shower, I use either "Bikini Zone" gel to fight razor burn. Another thing that works great is white solid womens deoderant (yes, rub it on there, but just on the top and bikini line--don't go too far down). Either one of these is great for preventing razor burn/bumps.
I hope this helps, and I have a feeling that if you do it, you will maintain it.....it just feels better.

Nair! i use nair down there and it's great, you don't get razor burn, sure u have to stand there for 10 minutes almost naked, but it takes off what you want whether its the sides or all, it doesn't hurt, no razor burn or ingrown hairs, n its about 4-6 bucks, works great for me!

I've found something that prevents razor burn after shaving the hair down there. Immediatly after shaving, apply some powder. I don't know why, but the powder has totally prevented the razor burn for me. It works great!

what type of powder? i ask because use of talc in the genital area has been linked with ovarian cancer. talc is also dangerous to the lungs - which is why it is recommended that it is not used for babies' bottoms anymore.
i use tend skin and it practically eliminates ingrown hairs/razor rashes, etc. i've heard witch hazel does the same thing.

to reply to your age question... I know it's bad but I probably started at 11-12 when I got my period.. it just made me so mad that the hair sort of absorbed the blood and wouldn't let go of it.. my mom wouldn't even let me shave my legs untill I was almost 15 but I used to sneak my dads disposable razors into my bathroom and do it after they went to sleep.. I think at that age I didn't keep it up because I didn't have very good results... (ouch.. ouch.. ouch...) so I probably didn't really start regularly doing it untill I was about 16
and about the talc... talc was only assumed to be linked to ovarian cancer when women used tremendous ammounts of it down there because they didn't bathe as often as we do now. if it were a real cause every woman born since the start of it's use in diapers would contract ovarian cancer.. it's been used long enough without such proof that the ovarian cancer rumors are just an old wives tale now...
just because someone says it will hurt you doesn't make it true... cranberries were assumed to cause cancer in the early sixties when my mother was a young teen.. her mother was extremely miffed that she couldn't find any cranberry sauce *anywhere* for thanksgiving since it was her favorite thing about the meal.. people go so overboard with all of this "such and such will cause this disease.." crap these days it's ridiculous.. really.. you can't live in a bubble
but to conclude my babbling... pretty much any body powder you get is going to contain talc... and somehow I doubt it's going to hurt you

I started shaving 'down there' before i shaved my legs! I would have been about 15- the age when I thought maybe I might let a guy go there, maybe- although it pretty much never happened until a few years later. Also, i liked being bare when I had my period because i felt it was more hygenic- and easier to clean up ( i wore pads though, now that i am a tampon only girl it doesnt really make a difference i guess).
I think the fact that so many people are responding to this topic means that a lot of us arent able to get this information from doctors or other health services- does this bother anyone else?
teresa26
09-03-2003, 09:59 AM
i would post the links for the talc/cancer link, but i don't think i'm allowed to do so. and when i had my son 4 years ago, i was told not to use baby powder because it has been linked to asthma.
i agree that sometimes there are faulty studies, etc that lead to unnecessary warnings, and more research should be done on this particular topic so that it can either be proven or disproven. so far, it's just a maybe. there is a link, but causation has not been proven. but this is one area where i am not going to take the risk. i used baby powder for several years before knowing this.
i'm not sure if baby powder still contains talc in it or not. i haven't had a bottle in the house in years.

what about the moose (i know it's spelled wrong http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/biggrin.gif), that is advertised to take hair off legs just by putting it on and rinsing it off...and then it's supposed to keep it from growing back for awhile...is that safe for that area? i dont know if the veet mousse is safe- but dont waste your money finding out because it relly doesnt work that well anyway. the stuff comes out of the can nicely but if you touch it, whole sections of it melt and if you respray it, the new stuff bloes the old stuff off- it was such a frustrating experience! and i still had to shave a day later!

i think it's very unnatural/unrealistic to be completely bare, but if you'd like less hair, try a little trim as some other people have explained.
i think it's in fashion now because of porn, and i see there's a bunch of us who agree on that. i don't think real guys really care one way or another. you're not weird, even if you don't alter it at all. it's just the fashion right now, but it's not a big deal, so don't worry about it.

Hello ladies! Sorry to intrude, but I was looking for info about the Split Ender for my daughter, when I came across this topic about which I feel very strongly.
The woman who asked the question is 41, I'm 47, I say don't shave. Maybe wax your bikini line, but if you shave that whole area, you're going to get stubble. And pardon me for saying this, but regular length pubic hair feels better than none at all, and especially better than stubble. And not all pornsters shave down there either.
I wish women wouldn't shave their legs either. My ex-wife used to go without shaving during the winter, and I loved it because the hair was so soft. She had dark hair, so I could understand her wanting to shave, but when a woman has light body hair, it glistens beautifully in the light. Too bad they want to shave that off, but judging from my daughter who has fine, light body hair, shaving seems to be some kind of compulsion.

Hello Ladies,
I came across this post out of curiosity and thought maybe I could share a man's view and experience on this subject. I love women that shave their pubic hairs, but not completely bare. The small strip is a favorite, but other shapes as well are a real turn on for me. Another favorite for me is shaving or waxing the "lips". My girlfriend ocassionaly does a Brazilian bikini wax (she says if done well doesn't hurt much) and I simply love it! Real smooth for oral "activities" http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif
I myself am shaver as well. I always thought pubic hair was very unhygienic and uncomfortable, so one day I decided to trim them with some scissors, was real happy with the results but through time I kept going further. I then started using a trimmer and scissors, trimming on the sides and cutting short in the middle. After, I started using a shaver and would trim the hairs very short and then shave the sides(using mach 3 and sensitive shaving cream). Presently, I shave using the Venus shaver (lol, because I was always having small nicks with the mach 3 and the venus turned out to be really smooth!) and shave everything (penis shaft and scrotum) except for a square or rectangle strip just above the shaft. I like to vary the amount of strip, sometimes I leave it short, other times I leave it long and fluffy, once I even managed to make it arrow like pointing downwards. My girlfriend simply loves it, besides turning her on extremely, she thinks its real hygiennic and loves to go oral!
How do you ladies view men shaving as well ? Do you like it short and clean ? Or do you prefer the natural look ? The really "bush" like ?
Hope I'm not intruding in any way http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif

I think its a shame that living in a "man's world" has made women so insecure about their natural bodies. Men don't go through nearly as much as we do, but yet they expect us to do everything for them.

I love the fact I have no hair down there. The itching only lasts for a little while if you keep the shaving up. Always be careful when shaving against the hair since it might nick and bleed a little. It doesn't hurt at all (being with out it). And as longas you wear normal underwear (no thongs cause they help create infections) then you should be fine. My boyfriend prefers women comfortable more than 'porn star' so I only wear comfortable underwear and he loves it. Anywho, I wish you luck. Do it for you and not for anyone else. I've been shaving for years now, and my gynocologist yelled at me at one point because I had so many nasty bumps. She told me it was bad for you and you should shave in the direction of hair growth, which I tried and does NOTHING. I found it best to let the hair grow a bit before shaving it, but the same is true for my legs. Guys like it because smooth shaven areas feel nice if you have soft skin. The point is to make it feel like silk. My ex used to shave and I liked it! It just looked so much cleaner. The area just tends to build up sweat and stuff because of it doesn't get any air which causes it to smell and probably build up bacteria. Then again, that bacteria now can reach your inner places a lot easier. So actually, men should shave and women shouldn't! It would probably be healthiest that way!

Am I the only one that doesn't do anything? I will shave a little on the sides and trim if I'll be swimming, and I trim a very little bit all year round. That's all, though. I can't believe people actually have that area professionally waxed. For what? I had my brows waxed once, and that was bad enough! My boyfriend has never complained or even mentioned it so I just assumed all women stayed natural. Weird.

I've never had a problem when it came to shaving, probably because I don't have much hair and it's very fine. I only need to shave my legs once a month, I tweeze my underarms twice a month, and for down there...I keep myself pretty bare except for a small strip up top. I primp this way because it's best for me and I like it. As long as you're comfortable with the way you "take care" of yourself, there shouldn't be a problem. Just don't do it because you think someone else will like it...Do what's natural to you.

OK, I’ll start by saying I hope you don’t get grossed out but I feel I am the only one out there with this problem. I am only twenty-five years old and I am very fair skin with blonde hair and blue eyes but yet I have jet-black wirery pubic hair. At the age of seventeen I went bald now I have to shave constant and it hurts bad. Because my pubs are so wirery I cant get close enough shave and suddenly I am growing pubs down the inside of my thighs not far down at all but scared if I keep shaving I am going to turn into a hairy animal. Please, does anyone know what I can use to keep at least the strip of hair I have silky? I have had this problem for so long and feel alone in this. Also the are so rough sometimes even when the strip of hair is short it can cause irritation to my hubby. HELP! Oh one more thing I have tried lotion and waxing and “again “ due to my ruff hair down there waxing is totally out the picture been there and done that.
Thanx

Hi everyone, I am a guy and wanted to share my thoughts on pubic shaving and women. First off, I SHAVE BALD too, so I am well aware of the effort involved. I started at 17 and went totally bald and never once regretted it. I have been waxed, so I know what women go through that way too. I do prefer a smooth pubic region on women as it simply looks more appealing. It has nothing to do with porn, just visually, smooth works better for me. So many have said how "unnatural" shaving bald is and how "real guys" shouldn't care. I am a real guy, and I won't ask a girl I'm going to be intimate with to leave because she has pubes, but I will sure give a go at shaving her as foreplay. I will also let her shave me, so the playing field is level. I won't ask anyone to do anything I'm not prepared to do myself. Hair may be a naturally occuring function on our bodies, but then again so is eliminating waste from our bodies, we don't save that, do we? If you're going to shave great, if not that is your choice too, but make your choice based on what is best for you.

You all have me rolling! The girl who asked if the poster had pubic hair all over her house? LOL. Sounds like she needs a Hoover Wind Tunnel. (I'm just kidding, please don't take offense).
In response to the original poster: I think you should do what makes you comfortable, not what the latest rage is or what you think some man would like. If you get into a relationship and decide to do something different, then by all means do it. But do not do it for a man. Men are so fickle anyway. My ex liked a small strip. After I was divorced, the guy I dated wanted a bald eagle. I've been there, and it is not for me.
Hey, and I know how it is to be in the "dating scene" again. After ten years of marriage, it is very different and I am trying to get used to it. Good luck!

I haven't stopped shaving since the first time I ever shaved.
I could not deal with the prickles coming out after that.
I shave the sides so it looks like a v strip and at the bottom.
It was hard to do at first (kept getting cut), but now it's a part of my hygiene just like shaving my legs.
It's feels a lot better than having hair cuz it feels cleaner, cooler and a lot more comfortable then having hair between there.
And sex is amazing when it's that way!
As for the sides it looks neater and didn't want hair peeping out of my panties or bikinis.
Lots of sudsy soap to where it gets creamy and a very good razor, not the plastic kind, but like Sensor or Mach3 mens razors, and be very careful.

Ever wonder why ancient Greek statues of women had no pubic hair? They removed it. The Egyptians removed all body hair. Ottoman women had all of their hair ripped off with a paste made of turpentine and honey (OUCH!). In Anciet Rome, men also shaved their pubic hair, and gay men removed the hair from their butts. (This information is from the book An Underground Education by Richard Zacks p. 156-7). So, it's nothing new.

I'm getting an education here! I'm going to ask my husband how he would feel about it. It certainly sounds like a good idea for cleaner, fresher periods. Can you use fresh and period in the same sentence? A new oxymoron.

I remember I shaved down there once and it itched really badly, to the point it was hard to sit still. Is there any way to stop that, or you just have to deal? Also are these products good for the bikini line, I hate that hair but I get bumps if i try to shave it.

I shave everything down there, and I love it. I don't do it for anyone but myself, and I don't do it because it's a "fad". I just think it feels better not to have hair there, and I think it's alot cleaner. I prefer my boyfriend to be either shaved or trimmed nice and short, but my female partners I have always prefered to be completely shaved, or everything except for a patch above the genitals...but lips definately shaved......it makes for MUCH better oral sex! ;)

A MALE'S PERSPECTIVE: Hair is for guys. Grab some sizzors and cut it back so that it is short. It doesn't have to be bald, just short. Now, is that too much to ask for?
