View Full Version : Does it look bad if the doc goes from Strattera -> Stimulants -> Strattera?

I was on Strattera for a while, and then asked to be put on Stimulants over the summer.

I didn't like the effect of stimulants, so I asked to switch back to Strattera. He seemed reluctant to do this, however, and I'm wondering if it's because it makes him look bad professionally?

Most likely since he first prescribed straterra a lot more information has become available to him (the doctor). Perhaps he thinks you are trying to chose a path he knows won't help you. Other then children, (at least according to their moms) I can't find many people who have actually been helped by Straterra.

It wouldn't make the doctor look bad in anyway.

Most likely, he was hesitant to put you back on a drug that you had already said you didn't like.

Even if you had been on it before. Your doctor should listen to you and how you feel. That is the bottom line!

Based on my experience with Strattera, I would hate for you to go back to it. You are familiar with my other post.

Another nurse told me. Only use the drugs that have been on the market for at least 5-6 years. Strattera is just too new. Even on the clinical trials, it was proven safe past 6 weeks for long term use. You are being a guinney pig! I don't want you to be hurt!

Hi Jayme, welcome to the forums. :)

I tried Adderall XR at 10mg, 15mg (that dose was TERRIBLE for me), and Ritalin LA.

I'm considering going back to Adderall XR at 5mg (if that's available), or Concerta. Thanks folks. :)

Oh yea, and I've tried reaching my doctor, but he hasn't called me back yet. I suppose I won't be able to see him until the next appointment, which is in about a month then. :o

LOL sounds like you need a new doctor if he won't call back

My 17 y o daughter is taking strattera and it really is a miracle drug for her.....she is 'normal' for the first time in her life.....it really doesn't help that much with her concentration but she is at last a part of our family ....we can enjoy her company and she is relatively free of inappropriate outburst.....she will go soon for a liver function test and I pray that all comes back ok so that she can continue on with this part of her treatment.....she began taking concerta along with the strattera last week and she seems better than ever.....thanking her prescribing nurse for this drug combination discovery.....keeping our fingers crossed that it can continue

Try Concerta. It is time released over the day, so you don't experience any peaks or fluxuations--it is supposed to be a more "balanced" addition to your system. Or, try a different dosage of whatever stimulant you are on. If Strattera did not work that well for you the first time, I'd spend time experimenting with other dosages and/or medicines before going back to it.

Specifically, what are the effects that you are not happy with from the medicine you are currently on?

The Strattera wasn't exactly the best when it came to concentration, though it did help me sit down and take lecture notes throughout the entire duration. I think it may have exacerbated my emotions as well.

I got put back on Strattera, but on a lower dose this time around - 50mg instead of the 80mg of before. Same problems, except now I'm terribly drowsy throughout the day. I might have had those problems previously and hadn't noticed them.

At the same time I'm taking Adderall, which definitely helps me stay calm and perform better socially. The unfortunate thing is that it seems to put a damper in my mood - I'm not quite as smiley or bubbly as before. :o

If you were taking a stimulant recently the sleepiness could be from your body "withdrawing" from that since you no longer have it. It took my son several months of sleepiness before he adjusted to not having the stimulant in him when he switched to Strattera. He still sleeps well, but not every afternoon now. The doctor told us this could take 3-4 months but it seemed a bit longer.
