:) I have not been diagnosed with diabetes yet. A few days ago I ate some candy, and a while later maybe 1 hour my husband who is diabetic took my blood sugar reading and it was 214. The next morning fasting it was 96. So can someone tell me if the 214 reading was a big deal or not? I would appreciate any thing anyone can tell me.
Thanks

Candy can really bring up your BS number. The fasting number of 96 was normal. If you wish to be absolutely sure get a check up. I would think you are probably okay. But you can eat a nice big meal and 2 hours afterwards check it. If your over 150 you have a problem. If your 120 or under you are just fine.

:) Thankyou EJ for your response.
I will keep that in mind and also keep a watch on it ,and have it checked out to be sure. My doctor said when I seen him last week that he was going to be on the lookout for diabetes so it had me wondering.I have some probems going on and waiting to find out what they are ,and I hope the waiting isnt too long. I have missed a lot of work.

Susan, It is normal for the blood sugar to rise 1 hour after eating. And because it was candy (all sugar) it does not surprise me that it rose to 214. The real key is, what happened 2 hours after you ate the candy? Did your body produce adequate levels of insulin to lower your glucose back to normal range? Since you did not test 2 hours after you consumed the candy you will not know this, but the fact that your fasting is 96 implies that there is no problem and you are quite normal.

If you are really curious, I recommend that you not test with candy, but rather a normal meal (dinner) and test precisely 2 hours after you start eating the meal. The result of this test will give you a clue as to if you should be tested further by your doctor.

Hi Susan,

It is not normal for someone who doesn't have diabetes to have a BG of 214, no matter what he/she ate so I would definitely check it out. Good luck.

Sharon :)

Dry itching skin, thristy a lot ,dry mouth, mouth feels sore like cracked gums,I have polycistic ovarian disorder,in thepast I use to always have a elevated sed rate, and last time under that doctor had a elevated c-reactive protein test, and not long ago had some mild amount of protein in my urine, but no infection. Recently took prednisone for pleurisy in my left lung. Was anemic to to prolonged and heavy periods, but that is better now.I have aching in different joints ,but it moves around a lot to different places. Here are some values: From National Institue of Health
Normal Values
For a 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test used to check for type 2 diabetes, normal (nondiabetic) blood values are:

fasting: 60 to 110 mg/dL
1 hour: less than 200 mg/dL
2 hours: less than 140 mg/dL. Between 140-200 mg/dL is considered impaired glucose tolerance. This group is at increased risk for developing diabetes. Greater than 200 mg/dL is diagnostic of diabetes mellitus

The fasting glucose tolerance test is the simplest and fastest way to measure blood glucose and diagnose diabetes. Fasting means that you have had nothing to eat or drink (except water) for 8 to 12 hours before the test. You are diagnosed with diabetes if your blood glucose level is 126 mg/dl or greater on two separate tests.

Hope this helps.
