mlgable 08-09-2002, 09:34 AM You do need to have these new areas of bleeding checked out by the doc. In the meantime though add Metamucil 3 times daily to your routine and add a stool softener such as colace aka docusate twice daily to help soften your stools. Dulcolax is a rather harsh laxative so I would tend to stay away from this. Use a glycerin suppository if no BM by the third day and if this does not produce sufficient results then go ahead with a baking soda enema. Since you are under a docs care when you see them about the new onset of blood in your stools ask them about a prescription laxative such as Miralax. In the meantime though increase the metamucil and add the stool softener. Also be sure to eat plenty of prunes or drink prune juice regularly.
bratinpain 08-09-2002, 06:40 PM thank you for replying migable! i will try the colace and ask dr about miralax,?? this miralax is that pill form? i cant do the metummucil thing so i do Benefiber instead. i eat lots of fresh friut and drink lots of water also! i just dont understand why i am always constipated ! if u have any other suggestions or anyone else does please help! thankyou!
mlgable 08-10-2002, 01:55 AM Miralax is a liquid. As to why you are constipated.....are you on any other medications? Due you perhaps have a mega colon? Are you getting enough exercise? You mention having had the constipation for about 8 years.............was there a particular incident you can remember that happened when you first noticed it?

JimmyRay 08-11-2002, 10:56 AM bratinpain:
Have you tried a good digestive enzyme product?
Within a week everything will start to move naturally.
JimmyRay
bratinpain 08-11-2002, 02:27 PM Thank you for replying Jimmy! Can you tell me a good product to use?
JimmyRay 08-11-2002, 08:37 PM Check the digestive disorders page. There is plenty of information there about enzymes and which are best.
I use "The Health Nuts Ultimate Enzymes" because they are the most well rounded enzyme on the market and price wise... much less expensive than other brands.

Boogieslady 08-30-2002, 11:02 AM Hey I understand how you feel and it seems as if your whole world is topsy-turvy when you are constipated. Things that I try that have helped me in the past are:
1. Prune juice (nasty but works) for quick relief but I had to learn to do things consistently so that I wouldn't need to drink prune juice as a quick fix. I knew that I needed to be regular.
2. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables (make sure you eat your green veggies and plenty of it. Or atleast as much as you can)
3. Staying away from rice, pastas, breads and junk foods (they only made things worse for me). I still eat them, just not as much as I used to.
4. Drinking water, water and more water. I used to get so tired of drinking water because I was a soft drink girl, but now I find myself drinking it all the time even when I go out to restaurants because now I don't feel right if I don't drink loads of it. You know that they normally recommend 8-8oz. glasses a day. I know that it sounds like alot but if it will help.... DRINK IT.
5. Learning to be consistent with eating fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. What I used to do is eat or drink just enough of the good stuff to get myself going again and then fall back into the same rut of eating a bunch of mess. I had to learn to be CONSISTENT because being constipated is no joke.
6. Adding fiber supplements if/when necessary. I usually take a fiber supplement daily because it's just that FIBER. It's not a laxative and you shouldn't form a dependency. It just helps to have that extra fiber...it certainly can't hurt.
7. When I do need that extra umph...I usually take a herbal laxative, cascara sagrada and that works as well. It's very, very mild and gets the job done.
8. You may want to try going to a health food store and get something to cleanse yourself. Start from scratch and then keep a monitor of what you put into your system.
9. I also try to keep a daily log of what I eat including snacks because I don't always know what it is that triggers me being constipated. That way I can back track figure out what I ate around the time it started to happen and try to weed whatever it is out of my diet.
10. You may want to try and stay away from those soft drinks but if you find that you can't try to double in water what you drink as far as soft drinks and that may help to balance things out a little. If you drink 8 oz. of a soft drink make yourself drink atleast 16 oz of water. This is just something that I make myself do so that I can keep myself on track.
11. Try to exercise as much as you can because that helps to keep things moving. I used to think that folks just said that, but it really works.
12. Try drinking green tea and you may want to try getting it from one of the asian health stores or somewhere like that because the others that you buy from the regular supermarket is just not the same.
13. Don't sleep on your vitamins. Take your vitamins DAILY. I take a multivitamin daily and it gives me what I may be missing out on when I haven't eaten enough of the good stuff. But it's not a substitution.
13. Buy apples, prunes, raisins and whatever has helped you in the past and keep them in your home and if you can keep some at work too!
14. Try to find out about everything that's high in fiber and go for it!
15. Pericolace is also a good laxative should you need one.
But all in all you sound like you may need to go and have a colonoscopy done or atleast go and see a doctor because you must be in a heck of a lot of pain and I feel for you. I've never had the bleeding or anything but I would stay constipated and it hurt like you wouldn't believe. I would be constipated for days, finally take a laxative and be sick for two days or more sometimes. But I stayed away from exlax because it was way too harsh. I finally had a colonoscopy this year and it was PAINLESS and I found out what I needed to know and I really recommend that you go and see a doctor because trying to fix this yourself may cause more harm than good.
Those are things that have helped me and I hope that they can help you as well because as I said before being constipated can mess up your whole world. If I think of anything else I'll let you know. Take care and good luck to you.
bratinpain 08-30-2002, 11:35 PM Thankyou for replying Boogie! i will keep and try some of the things you mentioned. i have to have a followup colonoscopy in october due to them finding a precancerous polyp 5 months ago. Spirit 09-12-2002, 08:23 PM I did the miralax and leaked for days-i would advice against it
black_eyes 09-14-2002, 04:37 PM hav u ever tried detoxification???? its suppose to 'flush' and 'cleanse' ur system. Can i ask, do u have acne or any other skin complaints?
Im doing that just now as i have chronic constipation.
I fast for one day and drink plenty of grapefruit or apple juice and lemon water (juice diet). then the next day i eat PLENTY of fruit. i do this for a 5 days...and then i gradually add fiber to my diet. Not too much or it could do more harm than good. i use to eat alot of junk food...and im not surprised if i have a blockage in my system somewhere.
Pears, prunes and apricots are excellent forms of laxatives....avoid bananas. choose wholemeal bread (brown) rather than white. chose whole wheat pasta...but again try and cut down on the starchy food. Sweet potatoes are a good alternative to white potatoes. Eat plenty of greens too. and cut down on junk food (not entirely - i luv my junk food, and im sure u do too). Cows Milk if drank excessively can also cause constipation...switch to soya milk. Cose more lean meat, and last but not least add omega 3 in ur diet (EPA). EPA comes from fish oil or flaxseed oil.
and EXERCISE, believe me it makes a difference!
pennyb 09-20-2002, 10:11 PM Omg your taking Zoloft and Lupron together. No wonder your having serious problems. I was on lupron for 6 months after having a laparascopy. They found plenty of endometriosis on my colon. I also was warned that lupron will cause severe constipation if you don't keep up with your liquid intake and fiber intake. I know it's hard to work out since lupron makes you feel not so good but that's very important. By the way how long have you been on Zoloft.
THESE ARE JUST MY EXPERIENCES, EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT.
bratinpain 09-20-2002, 10:37 PM penny, well im not on zoloft no more cause it messed me up i ended up being worse than before and ended up in hosp. due to severe depression! i was on it for about 1 month started on 25mg for 1 week then 50mg for 2 weeks then he moved me up to 100mg thats when it really messed me up! my last injection was a 3 month injection of lupron.that was about 1 1/2 months ago. Then my dr. is gonna give me the depro-vera injection! I had endo on my uterus all through out in also had some on my ureter (tube to bladder)! i have had alot of trouble with bowels before now they have just gotten worse i go through bouts of bloody diarea to severe constipation and lots of severe crampping and severe sharp to stabbing pains on my leftside right below and to the right of ribs! it really is no fun! i at times hurt so bad i just want to give up ! you know? i just dont know what to do anymore! thanks for your reply penny please keep in touch!
