Hey all

For the past week I have had a canker sore in the back of my mouth, close to the throat. Its actually slightly above the tonsil. Anyway, its a little bit under a centimeter in size, and it is PAINFUL! Everytime I swallow, talk, or even just move my tongue it hurts badly. What's worse is that its right near the throat, so I feel like there's an object "stuck" there. I asked the doctor and he recommended Chloroseptic lonsages (sp?) that had an anesthetic in them to numb the pain. These work okay, but don't last. Does anyone have any canker sore remedies, advice, or just comments? I'd appreciate ANY input at all. Is it normal for it to still be painful after a week? How long can these last?

Thank you so much

Vince

Sorry to hear about your canker. They are so painful and there isn't really a lot you can do. Mine ususally last about 10 days before they start feeling better.
To reduce the pain apart from rinses and Orajel, I make sure my lips are moist all the time. Use chapstick, lipstick, petroleum gel, whatever. I've also found that milk is about the only drink that doesn't irritate them.
Reduce your consumption of really dry foods, like crackers, cookies, things that get crumby in your mouth.
I hope you're feeling better. Hang in there!!

I have a long history with ulcers in my mouth.

Chocolate, tomato sauces, tomatoes, milk, spicy foods....are all culprits. Soothing them: Milk of magnesia rinse. It's gross, but it reduces the acidity in your mouth.
Getting rid of them all together: I've heard that I should be taking zinc. In the past when I have had a cold coming on and used Zicam (has zinc in it), it seemed that any ulcers that I had at the time went away quickly. Do I take zinc regularly~no. Why? I don't know...lazy maybe...or forgetful....
as I sit here with an ulcer under my top lip!

10 days from start to finish~sorry!
