Hi everyone,

My doctor just prescribed me this drug for sleep. Anyone else taking it? What about side effects? Anyone noticed any great benefits?

Any responses are greatly appreciated :)

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. Oh great, a dry mouth on top of an already dry mouth. I'm just worried about waking up like a zombie. The pharmacist also said it may take a few weeks to get the full effect of it. Yippee! More waiting!

Actually, does anyone know of a good way to relieve dry mouth other than lots of water and gum? I find my eyes get very dry and burn, as well as my nose gets so dry it bleeds. Anyone else?

I took it for a very short time because it gave me a false appetite and I didn't want to gain anymore weight. I am now on celebrex and am very satisfied with that. Good luck!

It was poison to me, I slept some, but the edema was frightening. I gained 30 + in a few weeks and my legs were like trees.

Have you had your thyroid tested? Dry eyes, achy bod...

Hi everyone,

I stop talking it. Made me into a zombie. It made me sleep, but not a sound sleep. As a matter of fact, the first few days I took it, thats all I did was lay in bed most of the time.

I was on amytriptaline for a year..and then nortriptyline for a couple months....I gained 20 pounds..and had dry mouth that was causing peridontal issues...and I was waking up at night, 2 to 10 times! The dosage was adjusted during the time I was on it. I decided that it wasn't working...I think my doc would have kept me on it. I saw a rheumy who told me that in his opinion the drugs in that class caused more problems than they cured! I know that some people do have success. But like most things with this illness. You have to be a good consumer and decide if it is a help to you or not. For myself, it was not worth the side effects. I am choosing to only use pain medication at this point and I have chosen to use the herb Valerian if I have sleep problems, that has worked better for me than the prescription drugs.

DOES THE VALERIAN ROOT REALLY WORK?

Yes, I tried it, and I was a zombie.. I suggest trying the smallest dose possible to see how it affects you. You can then increase it if you can tolerate it.
Good Luck,
Judy

RStarre, I have had good success with Valerian. The first bottle I had the suggested amount was 3 capsules. I am sorry I don't remember the mg that they are though. So I have used 3 at a time , making sure that they are always that same MG. I really do find that it helps me alot...and there are NO bad effects at all! The ONLY thing I have learned is that I can use it for about a month..and then I need to take a break for a couple weeks or it does seem to lose effectivness. Give it a try, they are inexpensive, and seem to be much safer than the other prescription meds that seem to be commonly prescribed for us. The down side for me is that I told my doctor that I was using this with a lot of success, and he was glad to hear it on the first visit that he was told. But, he has never bothered to look into it..and has since questioned it the last 3 visits! What is with Doctors....why don't they want to learn????

Well, I've tried it and I don't like it!! It definitely makes me a zombie and I still woke up constantly through the night. I am still working full time hours so I don't think this is something I will continue to take througout the work week. Onto the next....LOL.

I took Elavil for about 3 months. It helped with sleep issues, but gave me side effects of a racing heart (over 120/min) and severe sweating, like 10 times worse than menopause! not good....

I also took Amtryptilene for a while, not only did it give me horrible dry mouth, it gave me hallucinations. Never will I take it again! As for the dry mouth, you can get Biotene spray, they also have the biotene mouthwash and toothpaste, most drugstores have it, I got it at Walmart. The spray really helps with dry mouth.
