Do you remember anything from your wisdom tooth extraction? Meaning, were you awake at all during the procedure? If you were, what kind of sedation did you have? Thanks in advance.

If your not awake, obviously they put u under using whatever it's called and they freeze it. They are more gentle when you are awake, but I can't stand dental work, so I got put to sleep. Ratatosk 11-04-2004, 05:21 PM I was awake for mine. I had two taken out when I was 19 and the other two removed when I was 25. It was a cost issue for me. The oral surgeon back home only charged $70 and didn't believe in getting an anesthesiologist to come in and put you out; however, it was real common to put people out where I live now and I couldn't get a clear answer on cost -- anywhere from $300-1000. Oral surgeon numbed me with novacaine from my collarbone to my forehead -- couldn't feel a thing. Didn't hurt -- sound was kinda creepy, but I was in and out in 10 minutes. Back home in front of the tv with a bunch of icepacks on my face. Poo2 11-04-2004, 05:27 PM I had all 4 of mine out at one time. Mine were all impacted and they were so bad my jaw bone had to be drilled into to get them out. I had shots of novacaine put in so it left me completely numb. I also had a mask over my nose and mouth the provided me with a constant flow of nitrous oxide (laughing gas). This made me calm down while they were doing the surgery. I also got to look outside and listen to headphones. cjones15 11-05-2004, 02:37 PM I was awake when I had mine taken out. My dentist did 2 at a time. He said doing 4 at a time is to much stress on your bone structure, thatis why people bruise so bad. I had no bruising at all and you could only see a small amount of swelling on the day I had it done. I just received shots in my mouth like you would to have a filing. My wisdom teeth had not come in at all so the gums had to be completely split open. I had air pockets around all my wisdom teeth and there was no way they would have ever come in, I also had infection in the air pockets. When I had the last two removed I was 6 months pregnant. They still did the shots but not as many as the first time. I actually recovered a lot faster the second time. I ate fried chicken and went to the local fair that night and ate cotton candy! Make sure you are comfortable with your dentist. That is the most important thing. blondie301 11-05-2004, 03:22 PM I was asleep while mine were taken out. All 4 of them were impacted. The dentist gave me an IV and shortly after I was out. Next thing I knew I was waking up and it was all over. It was a piece of cake! lateeth 11-06-2004, 03:10 AM I also had iv sedation and did not feel a thing. I did see the instruments before i was out though and do not think i would want to go thru that awake. I had 6 teeth pulled at once but if i had just one i might consider just novacaine. I also had 9 teeth pulled as a child with laughing gas. I would definitely recomend some sedation for a child. It is just too scary a thought to go thru when you are awake, as a child. PBABY 11-09-2004, 03:08 PM I was asleep. My oral surgeon gave me something they called "liquid valium". I was told to count backwards from 100. They told me later that I got to 80. lol lol I woke up with a mouthful of gauze and some prescriptions for nausea and Lortabs. Never had to use either one of them. All 4 of mine were soooo impacted!!! Total cost-a little over$5000. Thank goodness for insurance. I only paid $50 for the initial x-rays they had to do to get an idea of what they were dealing with. Apparently, the roots had wrapped around my jawbone several times. Newlyweds 11-17-2004, 01:19 PM I was awake when my surgon pulled my wisdom teeth, all four even though they weren't bothering me, but its what I get for having to have my jaw broken. It wasn't that bad, I was given morphine, and laughing gas, I laughed the whole way through (said my surgon anyways) I don't remember that part. strensk 11-22-2004, 01:01 AM I was put out. You get me into a dentists office I am like a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, let alone into an oral surgeon's office. I had three wisdom teeth pulled, one was impacted and had grown sideways into the molar next to it, so that one had to come out too. They said I didn't have a fourth. At certain points I swear I could feel/hear them pulling the teeth, but I can't be certain. Over all not a bad experience. I slept intermittently on the couch for a day or so while I watched the TV. franstranges 11-22-2004, 01:17 AM I was awake for mine, just had my mouth frozen, had all four removed at the same time, only two were impacted. I felt an odd pressure, but nothing painful. I didnt bruise or swell after and was able to go back to work the next morning, no pain killers required. I heard that when you are awake they are much more gentle with you so the chance of swelling and bruising is a lot less. They even let me keep the teeth (as gross as that sounds i gave the to my to my baby brother as he wanted to see if he could fool the "tooth fairly" (man i wish i was that little again) If you have a good dentist you trust, I say stay awake. If you get nervous half way through, just say the word and they will take a break. My dentist did for me. ciao francesca ksc1968 11-22-2004, 03:56 PM what do you mean you had your mouth frozen? Is that different than numbing? DFC 11-23-2004, 11:03 PM "Freezing" and "numbing" is one and the same thing. I believe the term "freezing" is more commonly used in Canada, but it's pretty much recognized world-wide. franstranges 11-25-2004, 01:26 AM Sorry yeah freezing and numbing are the same, I guess you can tell I am Canadian lol ciao |
