Please help me figure out what could possibly be wrong with me. I have gained 35 pounds since June, I have leg, hand and ankle swelling, I smell cigarette smoke constantly, I am tired and when I get up in the mornings my legs hurt so bad I can barely walk. I have been to the doctor and they ran tests on my kidneys, liver, heart, thyroid and pituitary gland. Everything comes back normal. I haven't changed my eating habits, haven't done anything differently than normal and am VERY FRUSTRATED! Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Are you on ANY medications? Some have side effects of edema or you could be experiencing an allergic reaction (common with swelling).

I am on estrogen and prilosec for the last 2 years because I had a total hysterectomy. No changes in that at all. I have started to notice my left leg and foot being very hard to walk on and my left hand is very weak and hurts to move in the am. I don't know what's happening to me, but it's not good. Thank you for your reply.

When your thyroid was tested, did they do a TSH, T3 and T4 test? It is necessary to do all three tests to determine if you have tyhroid problems. Check to see if all three were done.

Exactly what lab tests were conducted and by whom? Do you have the results? If you post them here, we may be able to help you interpret them.

Edema is typically caused by a kidney malfunction - the question is are your kidney's ill or are they just responding to something else going on in your body? Either scenario is possible.

All of your symptoms are likely related to the edema - weight gain, pain, stiffness. When your body retains fluid it is certainly not comfortable. For your reference, 1 gallon of water weighs 8 lbs.

Other than an actual kidney disease, other conditions that would cause the kidneys to malfunction include viruses, bacterial infections, toxic exposure, allergies, endocrine illnesses (hormonal/glandular), liver disease, and any number of cardiovascular conditions. I can assure you that just because an initial blood chemistry workup did not point to the problem DOESN'T mean there isn't something wrong.

You need to return to your doctor with persistance. If your doctor won't help further, find another. You may want to see an Endocrinologist to rule out a number of serious illnesses.

For serious edema they should at least be running a 24-hour urine collection to test for protein/hormone levels. Did you have an Echocardiogram? Ultrasound or CTscan of the kidneys and liver? Any viral testing (for lupus or lyme disease)? What is your WBC?

Also, what is your gender, age, and weight? 35 lbs on someone who weighs 120 is a LOT more than 35 lbs on someone who weighs 250. Another question - are you unrinating more or less frequently than before you had symptoms? How much water do you drink?
