 : I really need some help my husband is bi-polar and is a huge amount of meds due to his extreme cylcing and intense vivad dreams. My husband has 19 hour sleep cycles and when he does wake up he is extremly aggresive and anxious and antsey my ? is he is beyond obsessed with gambling and I can't stop him he listens to no one and all of a sudden he is drinking a lot of alcohol with all his meds what do I do ? The doctors won't see him for to more weeks. The hospital just sends him home. And now his gambling has made him broke which has now increased his sleep cycle.

Thank you !

Have you told his doctor that he is drinking while he is taking all his meds? I can't believe that the dr is not willing to see him. Alcohol and drugs don't mix!!!!!!! Do the best you can to try to get him in with a dr and if you can't get it done then I guess you have done the best you can.

Hi Denise,

I don't know how much real help I can give you but I can give you encouragement and emotional support. It sounds like you are going through quite a time of it now. The alcohol and drugs combination is scary and I'm sure you've tried calling the doctors where your husband has a scheduled appointment but I think you need to do it again or stop into your local hospital and ask for advise. Walk into the emergency room if necessary. Some of what you described sounds borderline dangerous both for you and for him. My husband is Bi-Polar as well and several months back he underwent a 5-way bipass. This triggered a Bi-Polar episode and I just felt totally lost when he insisted on not listening to any of the medical advise given to him by doctors related to his heart surgery. I walked into the local hospital emergency room at midnight and spoke with a police officer there who told me that I could have him "Baker Acted" which means basically temporarily committed if I felt he was endangering himself. I don't know if this applies in all states but I live in Florida and it applies here. I didn't do it because I was afraid he would struggle with police and break open the stitches holding his chest together so I just "weathered the storm" but it at least felt good to know that there was an option in the event of a real drastic emergency. Good luck to you and know that there are spouses of Bi-Polar patients out here for you to talk to and to support YOU in your time of emotional need as well. Deb
