All you hear today is that so many people today are fat or even obese. Well, stop and think about the numbers of people who have quit smoking and that could very well be a contributing factor. I know that I never had a weight problem until I quit smoking.

I can see where you're coming from with that.. But also take into consideration our propensity to take prescription mood altering drugs, fast food chains every 2 urban blocks, sedentary lifestyles, etc etc. There are so many reasons why people are heavier now more than ever, there are a lot of articles out there about the subject. Smoking is a minor culprit and I actually think that we (Americans especially) need to find that willpower we used to have!

I was heavier at one point and lost it from a diet change and working out. I am filling out a little bit since I quit smoking, but I am not active either being on disability and having a lot of pain and not working. I do know however, that once I quit I will be able to lose the weight. I think it has to be a decision, and you have to stick with it.

I believe that one would have to be about 100 pounds over weight to have the same negative effects from weight gain that you get from smoking.

I have heard of people gaining 10 pounds or so from smoking but never so much that it equals the health risk of smoking.

Weight gain is not a good reason Not to quit smoking.

My dad did gain weight after he quit smoking and I have put on a pound or so. I think the problem is getting more exercise and having something to do with our hands when were not active. The hand to mouth habit is hard to break. Instead of grabbing that cigarette, were grabbing food. Cucumbers seasoned with Italian Dressings is helping me out when I get those smoking urges. We have to pat ourselves on the back for kicking the bad habit that kills us, and start using our lungs to get fit and live healthy lives. We can do it. Let's don't ever give up, not even to one puff, lets live and feel good.....Mama Kay

I know alot of overweight and obese people who still smoke and some you never smoked.

I quit smoking a year and a half ago. I haven't gained weight, BUT I also haven't lost any weight. When I quit smoking I started exercising 2-3 times a week and eating better so thankfully that helped keep my weight in place. I definately had to work out more and eat less BUT thats only because when we quit smoking our metabolism decreases and we tend to eat more when we have nicotine cravings.

I really doubt that the obesity problem in the United States is a result of people quitting smoking. We drive everywhere, sit in front of TV, and fill up on junk food full of fat and refined sugar and flour. And we start these unhealthy habits at very early ages.

It's been 13 months now since my quitting, and my weight has gone up and down, which it did anyway, even before I quit. Right now I'm about 10 lbs heavier than the day I quit. Big deal! I also just returned from my daily 3 mile walk, something I never did, (hardly ever), before quitting. I eat healthy food now, all the time, didn't do that very much before I quit either. I am healthier and more fit today, and I will not smoke, even if I were to gain another 10! It would just be another excuse if I started smoking again due to my weight.
I was always too obsessed with being really skinny, and that was part of the reason I smoked all of those years...I knew it would aide me in keeping myself thin. I won't fall into that trap again! I may not be a twig any more, but I look normal now, and not just because I'm a more healthy weight, but I don't have one of those dumb, itiotic things hanging out of my mouth!! :nono:
