Can having a lot of iv's for hydration as well as TPN, dilute your blood lowering your red blood cells, enough to need a blood trasfusion. My grandmother is in the hospital with a bowel obstruction due to ovarian cancer that is now pretty much all over. She was supposed to go home today after getting her Pic line, but they discovered her red cell count low enough to need a transfusion. They said maybe it was the iv's, does that make sense or is it more likely bleeding, she had surgery 8 days ago to relieve the block but they opened and then closed because she has too much cancer. They will probably send her home tomorrow and we would like to have an idea of what we are dealing with. Forget about asking the dr.'s, I won't even go into the horror stories of what has happened with her since she has been there. Her oncologist jumped ship when she found out my grandmother will not be getting anymore chemo. She told my aunt, when my grandmother was admitted and my aunt asked her if this was the beginging of the end, that there was still hope and they would do all the tests and then if it came to that, she would talk with the family so decisions could be made.A few days after surgery, the dr.quit coming and after angry words she showed up five days later, went in the room to talk with my grandmother and her husband while the family waited outside, and then snuck out a back door and never talked with the family at all. The horror stories are many but this one makes me sick. My grandmother really trusted this dr.

jenshops,
I'm really sorry you and your family has to go through this. I just lost a close cousin to cancer last month and it is a really awful thing to go through. Her doctor sounds like a flake. Maybe he/she is avoiding you guys because they may have missed something or made a mistake?. Anyway, it couldn't hurt to get a second opinion, provided your grandmother wants to. Take care.
