I do not want to go to my GP, he will just refer me to someone else. Who do I go to if I want to get my vocal cords and throat examined? I constantly have to clear my throat and when speaking in a low voice, it's very hoarse. What is another name for ENT (Ear Nose Throat) specialist? I can't find "ENT" on my insurance's provider list.

Hi Joe,

Good idea to check out your hoarseness. Ear, nose, and throat specialists are known as otolaryngologists.

Good luck!

Another name for ENT is Otolaryngology.
(oops, didn't see that was answered above.)

Joe,

I had cancer of the right vocal cord, which manifested itself as increasing hoarseness over a couple of months..

So hie thee to an otolarynologist to investigate what you have. It may be allergy, sinus drainage, or other such things. But if it's anything more serious, the earlier caught the better.

Caught early, there's about 95% cure rate for vocal cord cancer. It's been over five years ago that I had treatment for this (radiation) with no sign of recurrence.

Regards,
Bill

I went to an ENT and he used that scope thing to view my vocal cords. I had same problem as you--hoarseness, sometimes no voice but a croaking sound! I was afraid of the scope, but it wasn't as bad as you think.

Surprise--nothing to do with my thyroid problem. It was stomach acid backing all the way up there! Now I've been taking NEXIUM 2x daily and my voice has improved in only 2 weeks.

You won't know what your real problem is until you get to the ENT. Good luck--hope it's not too serious. Let us know....
