This isn't a thread that is used very much. I wish more people would respond, but maybe they are using other boards like diet, exercise, etc. Anyway, my reason for changing my eating and exercise habits are personal. Both of my parents died at a relatively early age. My father had emphysema and heart problems due to smoking and alcoholism and my mother (who was actually pretty healthy although overweight) died of a bleed in the brain. That was shocking to us and the doctors never really told us what could have caused it. My aunt died of a lung disease due to smoking and job related inhalants. So you see, I long to hang on to a ripe old age! Something that really motivates me when I reach for that cookie and make excuses for not exercising is to remember my father whose health habits were atrocious. He was overweight, never ate vegetables or fruit, drank heavily and like I said smoked about 3 packs a day. He died at age 48! I am 47 and I am really motivated to break this family curse. His side of the family all had cancer and emphysema, but they all lived like he did. This is big time motivation for me. I am proud to say that I eat about 4 to 5 servings of fruit and veggies a day (but could be more). And my kids do pretty good also. I don't smoke or drink and take medicine unless I really have to. This is just a message to all of you out there who need a little motivaton. My goal is to be the first in my family to run a marathon. Even if it is a 5 K relay. Good luck...

Good to hear about your determination to live healthier and longer. It will be hard at first, you need to ajust the way you think about food, exercise and indulgences. After awhile you will do these things without thinking about the cravings.

Great topic! It's kind of like true or dare. My reasons are 1. to be able to open a pickle jar without asking for help, 2. really bad family history and genes, 3. had a go in with high choleserol, 4. to motivate my sister that I love so much, 5. I like my body, 6. to keep up or surpass my hubby, 7. so I can still lift up my 6 year son, 8. love fruit and vegies,(It tastes good.) 9 I enjoy the great boost of energy so I can run circles around everyone.....Oh, yeah, I almost forgot....10. I enjoying having less colds and quick recoveries. Did I skip anything???? :bouncing: :bouncing: :bouncing:

Good for you!!! I hope you get to run that 5K marathon.
I changed my eating at different stages; 1, when i kept getting headaches, 2. when I started getting acne and 3, when I started gaining weight.
I feel SO much better now that I eat better. Granted its a LOT of work and I always seemed to be thinking about the next meal or then next days meal (not that I'm obsessed, just have to make sure that things that need soaking get put in water)
I'm at the pinacle of my eating and I think this change is permanant - I just kind of 'got it'. I eat a lot of delicious food - prepared by me (with the help of internet recipes sites!!) - and with lots of good quality exercise, I'm feeling stronger than ever.
