Please Help! I hope someone else has this so my Mother can get some advice.

Basically, she's 58, she was working out at bally's and screwed up her foot somehow. The doctor's think she needs surgery to correct the problem. But gradually, she developed Fibromyalgia. They think that this is because she can't walk all that well, and the foot pain is so great, that it just spread throughout her body. Now, it's like, her body is depressed. Sleeps alot, fatigue, headaches, body pain (constant), lack of motivation. (All this even while she's on anti-depressants.

Here's what she takes -
Effexor
Lamictal
Risperdal
Lorazapam
Trazadone
Adderal
Minocycline
and one pain pill - Hydrocodone 7.5 mg
one muscle relaxer - Skelaxin 800 mg

Please Help, thank you

I have heard that FM can be caused by a post-traumatic incident, as well as physical trauma. Myself, I have no idea why I got this or how. I see the rheumatologist on Dec. 6th so maybe he will be more informative. Has your mother spoken to her GP or seen a rheumatologist? A specialist can help make sure she is taking the right meds, as well as get her into the proper treatment programs [chiro, massage, etc...].

OMG......I just read your post. I am a true believer that FM is caused by Trauma and Stress. I was diagnosed with FM about 6 months after I was done with Chemotherapy from Breast Cancer, which came 6 months after I had spent over a year learning to deal with Severe Bi Polar Disorder.

I took most all of the meds your mother takes, and those alone will make you feel bad.....or at least they did me. The effects of the drugs was worse to me than dealing with the effects of BPD. I saw my GP and a Rheumatologist, and no one could give me any concret answers. Just that I have FM and all they could do is treat the symptoms. I started doing my own research and read several medical journals about how Acupuncture and Supplements are the number one treatment for FM, decided that I had nothing to lose by trying it.

I started off doing Acupuncture twice a week, as well as adjustments. I did a DETOX for a week, I started taking better care of myself by taking supplements, making sure I get enough fruits and vegies in my diet, and getting pleanty of rest. I can now say after 7 weeks, my life is so much better. :bouncing: :bouncing: :bouncing:

Good Luck

EDIT:::::: Rispirdal is an awful drug, it affected my hormones and I even lactatited and I wasn't PG, it made me feel like a zombie, it's one drug I will never take again. When I deleted it, my symptoms went away and I felt better.

I agree with what the others have said. I worked in a nursing home as a N/A, a resident put me in a headlock and herniated a disc in my neck. Within 3 months I was diagnosed with myofascal pain syndrome and 6 months later with Fibromyalgia. I blame this all on the work injury. Now I have costochondritis also. I believe any type of trauma can set Fm in motion.

Hope your mother feels better soon. Do you mean Bally's casino in Atlantic City?

That is probably how you did get it Tam. I doubt it would disappear with PTS treatment Tam. Even once you get on the correct medication and work with counsellors to deal with the stress and anxiety issues that we all seem to have, it is still there, lingering in the background. You may be able to control it a bit better than you are now and would probably be able to get your sleep under more control as well, which is essential to an FM patient.

Good Luck.

mine seems to be related to chronic stress--one big trauma after another--without any help mentally from my spouse. Layer upon layer.

I maybe always had it...but am waiting for the final dx.

I've had "spells" where I had symptoms, but they came and went in a short time.

Last year (May 30, 2003 !) I fractured my pelvis (in 2 places) and my sacrum (1 place).

Believe me, I have not been even close to 65% of my old self since then !

I still have Drs. who treat me like I am stupid... basically it's "she is just menopausal and depressed". NOT ! I've been both on and off... they don't usually cause pain ! LOL

I think also what really got me into "full swing" was the little stint I did on Crestor. I didn't feel this bad before ! I have stopped taking it.

So I have a question... do most of you seem to be unusually sensitive to medications? Like, whatever a "normal" dose is... if you take it... it is WAY too much? I have had that problem forever and wondered if that was something we had in common.

Thanks for being here ! (I only have access from work - Monday-Friday)

I'm still waiting for a final diagnosis as well. I've had "flashes" of symptoms as long as I can remember, and my mom said I had some even as a baby. I pulled my sciatic nerve in March, and that is when this all started. My boyfriend had also moved away to work for the winter, so that was a really rough time for me.

I do seem unusually sensitive to medications. I've had to cut doages in halves, even quarters. My stomach also seems to get irritated easily.

NO, you are not alone

i have severe ptsd with all the wonderful things that go along with it. i did find that occasionally i would have severe pinpoint pain in the middle of my back for no reason. after some time ,i realized that the pain was in the exact spot where i was pushed to the ground with an ak47 machinegun muzzle while i was in the middle east. i didnt think i was going to make it out of that situation alive. now, there is no real injury there. xrays are clean but it hurts even as i type this out. so ,,i agree with the others. stress can equal unidentifiable pain.

wow survin, thats awful,,, after reading all these posts it does make sense that a tramua, mental or physical can trigger FM... there is some prove on that...

someone with a lot of stressss day to day, could do it,, I have been searching and reading trying to find answers..

mine was about 9 years ago, mostly emotionally stress out of work injury i had,, and all the BS,,, that was involved, really took a toll.

well, at least I understand alot more and WHYYYYYYY I got this,
it helps me to understand WHY ME question...

I believe the same. I had an auto incident 7 years ago and ever since I had this terrible neck pain. Back then, nobody diagnosed me with FM. To fix my neck pain, I went to see a chiropractor last Aug and that's when he tore my back muscle. I have herniated discs in my neck and back. I'm in lots of pain like your mom is. It all started with my neck and back and now it's everywhere. I have irregular bm, lost appetite, no sleep, etc. etc. etc. I also believe stress contributed to this. I've been living a very stressful life for the past 5 years and it sure doesn't help my condition - it's making it worse... I somehow must learn to control my mind and body better...

hey tam-I too have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and I am in therapy for it-I also see a psychiatrist for the meds-I have been told that it is possible..possible for some of the symptoms to alleviate but as far as going away-I was told not to expect any miracles-the best we can do-and mind you everyone is different so you may make a full recovery!!-is work through the pain(mental and physical) and we will improve one way or another!! I totally reccomend getting therapy if you can!!!good luck!!!
