View Full Version : Should I Get Hemmorhoid Surgery?

Hi,

I've been suffering from an annoying hemmorhoid for the past 8 years now. The problem runs in my family and I also wasn't getting enough fiber in my diet 8 years ago.
I let it get too big before I finally, 2 or 3 years ago, started getting more fiber and drinking more water.

Well, now I don't strain at all. So I don't have a painful hemmorhoid. But it's an annoying one that pops out after every bowel movement. I then have to go an sit down for a while, before it will go back in. Then,
for the rest of the day, if I stand up for about 10 minutes, it slowly works it's way back out again. It doesn't hurt when it's out, but it feels very uncomfortable. Sort of like a clothes pin is pulling on my anus. Ugh!

I've had injections which eliminates the popping out for about a few weeks, but then it's back to the same old routine. Should I have surgery? Is it worth all the pain?
Will the problem return? I'm 38, and feel too young to have this problem which limits me from enjoying hiking, for example.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has undergone hemmorhoid surgery.

Thanks,
Steve

Have you been to see a gastroenterologist about it?

Hi Steve,
Sorry about your hemorrhoid but the only way to get rid of it is surgery. There is a way call banding that is suppose not to be as painful. I don't have any experience with that method.

I had the hemorroid surgery done many years ago and it was flat painful. Not only that your rectum that is a round sphicter muscle ----is not round anymore with some hemorrhoid surgeries.

The problem is if you are not careful ---they can come back even after surgery.

I have found taking a water soluble fiber supplement and alot of water helps alot in living with them.

God Bless----Harry

I just had the surgery 3 mos ago.. I would not recommend it to anyone..I had inners and outers so they butchered me up pretty good..
I thought I was going to have call 911 a couple of times during a BM..It was horribly painful.. I would try the bands if I were you
Especially if yours are external..Good luck..

I, too, had hemorrhoid surgery ...mmm...just about a month ago. And I'm still recuperating! I have faith that in the long run things will be much better....I'm hoping anyway. I do know that if I would have known what it was going to be like after the surgery, I probably would not have had it done. I have a pretty high tollerance of pain... so I thought! I bled a lot after each BM that I had for about week. That has subsided a lot. I still have some pain and soreness and will bleed a little when I have a BM now. Metamucil helps... but everyone is different. It's kind of trial and error for how much you need to taken and how often. The whole thing just pisses me off sometimes! hehehehehehe....I'm sure you all know what I mean. I'm tired of my butt being the thing I think about most every day! I have pretty much grossed out my husband and friends by talking about it.

I originally went to the doctor because of a thrombosed hemorrhoid that had to be taken care of. That was a piece of cake compared to the surgery. Then....I was going to go in and have 2 small internal hemorrohoids taken off. The Doctor told me there wouldn't be any pain because there are no nerve endings inside. Well.. the day I was supposed to have this done...he decided that he wanted to take off the three external hemorrohoids that I had because they happened to be a little swollen. Sooooo... needless to say...I wasn't really prepared for this! He did it in the office... shot me with the shots to numb me... which didn't help! Then used what I called the wood burning tool! Each time he was cutting...I could feel shooting burning pains. All he said was...don't move, don't move....and all I said was... okay...ow,ow,ow, I can still feel it...ow, ow, ow. What an ordeal.

I was supposed to go back 2 weeks later to have the internal hemorrhoids removed. I was just about hyperventilating when I went to his office. I was terrified to have anything more done. He examined me and said that where he removed the external hemorrhoids previously...was healing "nicely" and looked "beautiful". BEAUTIFUL? I doubt it! heheheheh...at any rate... he got ready to do the internal hemorrhoids...and asked me if I wanted to have this done today...and I said, no. Just like that, no. I just couldn't put myself through it. It probably wouldn't have been so bad....but I was just about having an anxiety attack.

Well... there you have it. At any rate...I'm still healing. Harry... and Bill Magic specifically.... how long did you take to heal? I don't mind the details. Really! I like to know your ordeals.

Take care....all of you!

Hi Harry,

Curious if you tried any alternative methods of treatment, before resorting to surgery?
Accupuncture for example. My girlfriend is saying I should give it a try, before even thinking about surgery. What do yo think?

Also, you say they can come back after surgery. What if you maintain a good diet with lots of water and fiber intake?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins around the anus that are very much like varicose veins---the vein enlarges and basically loses its elasticity and sometimes form a sack like pouch in the rectum.
I don't know of any alternative type of medicine to treat them but there are many things you can do to keep from getting them.

They are caused by straining when having a BM particularly if constipated, heavy lifting or lifting the wrong way, long standing or sitting, lack of exercise, overweight, and I have read of even allergies causing them. So, with that broard range of causes ----alternative treatments are sort of difficult. I read that half of the people have hemorrhoids by time they are 50.Age has very little to do with when you can get hemorrhoids.

There are plenty of people caring for hemorrhoids leading active/ normal lives ----you just have to learn to take care of them.

You first never but never allow yourself to become constipated. Take a water soluble fiber supplement daily. It's a safe bulk stool forming agent that helps produce a gentle BM. Drink the recommended amount of water 6 to 8 glasses daily. There are many good rectal ointments available.

God Bless---Harry

Steve,
There are a number of different methods for removing hemroids. Some of the newer methods, like banding are becoming prefered over the older, cauterizing method. You need to take some time and do some research until you find a method you can live with. Check with various surgical institutions like the Cleveland Clinic to find out what the last methods are. Medical colleges are a great place to find the very latest medical information. I have heard of a recent method whereby they inject this material into the hemroid that causes it to shrink up into scar tissue. Who knows what else is out there.

Your hemroid, as I picture it in my mind, needs to come off. As you get older it can become a very serious problem. It also becomes a serious operation to remove them when you get older.

(If you heard about the "tie one end of the string to the doorknob" method, don't do that.) :)

Solstice, you don't want to get your internal hems cut out..Thats what mine were, internal.
I could barely pee for 3 days because of the epidermal I had..I finally had a BM 5 days after surgery.. It took about 3 hrs to complete..Almost called 911 twice...
It was like raw nerves just ripping apart for 3 hrs...And again, because of the shot, the sensation to push wasn't working so it just took forever..I ended up in the bath tub, because I didn't want to pass out on the toilet, with a lot of blood going down the drain, poop and a spoon...yeh..it was real ugly and excrutiatingly painful..
I took alot of pain pills and didn't get out of bed for 1 1/2 days after the first..The BM's for the first two weeks were similiar to the first one..Talk about anxiety.. I tried to make myself get diareah so it would be less painful.
I would not wish that on Satan..
Anyway, i went back to work after 5 weeks and was OK, except a little pain after a BM which wouldn't last long.

I would encourage anyone who has internals to get another procedure besides cutting them out...

I have an internal one right now that is constantly and excruciatingly painful. No burining, no itching...just PAIN. With a mirror and the right position, I can see it. It's elongated, about the diameter of a BIG pea. I've tried prep-h to shrink, and Tronolane to kill the pain with little change. Does anyone have experience with the banding method of removal?

I've had an infrequent hemmorhoid in the pad, but nothing that required any more than a touch of pain releif for a BM.

I'm going to the doc tomorrow, so we'll see what they say. Man...I never thought something so small in such an inconspicuous place could hurt so much. Any advice for pain releif in the meantime?

Thanks,
Dave

Hello

I have had hemorroids for at least 10 years. Also with a lot of blood in toilet. My doctor said that hemorroid surgery is very very painful and does not recommend it.

Right now I'm trying to find out more information about "anal pain." Something is definitely happening to my rectal area. I also had back surgery in February of this year. I am not sure if it was something to do with the surgery which is causing me pain (like the nerve endings), or maybe something like a fissure. I will be making an appointment with my doctor. This pain is like a pain inside and somewhat outside the rectum and feels like a thousand bugs are biting me in that area (hard to describe). Or do hemorroids really get that bad and hurt and throb this much? I've never had this type of throbbing pain before. I did have a colonoscopy about 5 years ago, and all was ok except the hemorroids.

I am curious to find out exactly what Sitz baths are? Is it just sitting in a bathtub with warm water?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello to all,

I just wanted to add my 2 cents...lol...This is to the people that has had things removed or whatever in a DR.s office I TAKE MY HAT OFF TO YA>>>>>> even with a shot to num it.....I couldn't .....anyway I have to go in for surgery to have a few things removed on Wed the 26th
and there is no way I mean no way in the world I would have anything (removed down there) done like that in any DR.s office.......I don't care how good they are at what they do. I went to 3 different DR.s till I found one that would put me out......and thank god I did....because (and I didn't know this before) but there are more pain nerves or fibers down there they any place on the body, that is why it is so painful....to have anything done. Sorry to say this but when a DR. even hints that he would like to do it in his office.....it makes me wonder (if they had the same problem) what would they do.....I can almost guarantee they would be put out............... but that is only my 2 cents.......hey I think that was about 3 cents does anyone have any change.......thanks for listening......

Thanks Sakara. So how has it been, since your surgery?
Was it worth it? Or are you still having problems?

Go for banding instead if you are a candidate.

I find myself reading questions and submissions about the various forms of doing away with hemmorhoids that are more than five years old. Has there been a solution to the problem that apparently everyone now knows about so that there aren't any more sufferers out asking which methods are the most desirable?

If not, then I just want to add my experience with hemmorhoids. I suffered with the affliction much after my 40th birthday usual after a BM necessitating my manual reinsertion of the protruding vein/s (never knew if there were more than one). I don't quite remember how the subject came up but somehow I found myself in the Surgical Clinic in the Los Angeles Wadsworth VA Hospital. And after the physician made his examination he informed me he would apply a couple of bands to ameliorate the problem. (Guess there were more than one) So he had me lean over a table, my rump in the air and he proceeded to insert into my anal cavity some kind of cylindrical tube (not at all uncomfortable, but for sure noticable) and I heard a couple of clicking sounds. It didn't take more than 15 or so minutes for the whole procedure, exam, and application of the bands.
The only disconcertion I experienced is that the female nurse was witness to the whole thing, but I chalked that up to her gaining experience to the process so she could relay any such info to any future patient that might wish to undergo same. In his teaching commentary to the nurse the doctor said that there was precautionary techniques necessary in the application for if not done correctly some pain would ensue, but such was not the case with me. I was informed that the rubber bands were now encircling the veinous protrusions flush against the rectal wall and that their blood supplies were restricted and given such they would soon wither and eventual slough off and away with subsequent BM's. That was some years ago and I've not had any problems since. To answer any one questions about banding as a method to rid oneself of hemmorhoids, I'd recommend it highly. And given I had the procedure done in an ordinary examination room, I guess one could
consider it an office environmental activity.

i would like to add my two cents on this subject.i had three internal hemorrhoids
removed plus fissureometry and syfinctomentry all at once. in December of
2006.i was in the hospital with morphine after for three days .i will tell you
hemroid surgery is a painfull recovery but i have painless bm now and it was worth it . i was bleeding and in pain all the time and it took over my life.
there are many people on this site who had it and now live normal lives with
pain.there is no other way to completely remove it form cutting it off the hemroid.i had one of the best colorectal surgeon guide me threw all the details
of this ordeal told me it will be a tough three weeks but it will get better
and you will get on with your life.i followed this protocol and it worked.

1. you must get a top colorectal surgen ,no room for error!
2. you must have free flowing bm a week before surgery.
3. you start taking colace and fiber powder to be regular
4.the night before take miralax or moms you must not be impacted
5.pain pills are constipating and this regime will help you have soft flowing bm
6.soups and veg and egg whites for two weeks plus vitamins and olive oil

if you decide to do this ,do it now while your young it will be harded to
recover if you wait till your a lot older. there are positive to this and you will
be able to not deal with your hemorrhoids after you recovery.

most important advise is find the best colorectal surgen to do this

good luck
