View Full Version : Will my toenail ever be normal again?

About two years ago I was moving a very heavy sectional couch with my boyfriend and it fell on my big toe. It hurt, but I didn't notice until later that my toenail was bleeding (and had bled through my sock). My toenail became a little discolored and was painful. About a week afterwards, I was locked out of my house and had to jump through a window to get inside. During this process, I smashed the toenail against the side of the house and it became more injured and almost completely unattached.

Since this time my toenail grew back, but not the "right" way. It grows out, but is not attached underneath. When you look at my toe, you can see a gap between my skin and the nail and I can sort of lift the toenail slightly. It seems like it is just barely hanging on. Sometimes it causes me some pain. So anyway, is there any way to get the toe back to normal, or will it just be this way forever?

Thank you very much!

OUCHY! That sounds like it was painful - I am not sure what to tell you. I was just going to suggest for you to get in with a podiatrist soon. Maybe they could help you to get it to grow correctly again. I clicked on your post b/c I thought it was going to be about ingrown toenails - I had a dr. cut mine out and it took forever for it to grow back to normal and I was asking this same question. It is completly back to normal now. Sorry if I didn't help!!!

Once the matrix (the root) is damaged in this manner, it is irreversable and permanent. If the detached nail is painful, you just might want to consider having it permanently removed.
