Real soft stools is not a problem but loose stools is. If they are formed but just real soft then that is ok but you can add metamucil to your daily routine to help put more bulk in your stools. If they are indeed loose then you need to see the doc to find out what is causing them.

If it is diarrhea, then there could be a problem but then again it might be temporary. For example, you might have had a diet change. Or you might have a bug that will go away. But if you watch your diet and the problem persists for more than say 2 weeks, then it is time to see a doctor who will generally look at you and wonder what to say without looking too much at a loss. Then he might say give it some time and here are some tablets for the symptoms and see how you go. Then when you come back he might say let us do some tests. But really, the causes could be as many as you like and you could be searching a long time if this is the first time you had diarrhea.

what exactly are loose stools? I have heard they are stools that come out without any effort, but I am not sure exactly what they are. Could someone clarify this for me?

Loose stools would be the kind that have the consistency of mushy oatmeal.
