I have problems staying asleep at night. I usually wake up about 7-9 times a night. My doctor gave me Ambien. I take one about 3 - 4 nights. The nights I don't take them, I am always waking up. Any ideas? My doctor gave a script for 30 of the Ambien and told me to stretch them out. He probably won't refill it. (he's afraid of addiction) . Thanks, Tina

I used to take Ambien until I realized that after a week or less of them I couldn't sleep without one. It's called addiction, isn't it? Tolerance? BAD drug.
Ambien cannot compare with xanax for insomnia. I've tried everything over the decades and xanax is by far the best drug - as long as you leave it alone during the day. That's the ticket.
But I don't take it at bedtime unless I'm Really upset over something. What I take each night that somehow works great is GNC's Cherry Flavor sub-lingual Melatonin 1mg. After ten minutes your eyes start blurring over! LOL
It is really terrific. :) I take a little xanax around 4 am if needed to return to sleep.

I agree that Melatonin works well for you. However, if you take it everyday, your body will get used to this drug. I suggest you taking it about twice a week. Melatonin is only a supplement. In addition to that, please try to exercise, eat healthy food, and take mul-tivitamines regulary.

Hey Tina,
I take Ambien as well because I can't fall a sleep and sometimes I don't sleep for 3 days or I keep waking up through the night. This causing me to feel very tired the following day. My doctor did not to want to give me a refill because of the possible addiction but it helps me so they have to give it to me. Ambien stops working for me after a certain amount of days of taking it and causing amnesia. I also take other medication that helps with the sleeping. You should ask your doctor about a medication called Trazadon which will knock you out for sure. I had taken Trazadon a while ago but I had a hard time waking up the next day and my dreams were very vivid but what does not work for me might work for you. It's hard finding the right medication and it can be costly but the only way to find something is through trial and error.
Also, addiction is when you you take more then what is prescribed by your doctor and you keep increasing. But if you stay at the proper amount daily then your fine. Just remember there are several of people who cant sleep and really on medication and what ever works will do. I use to take OTC sleeping aids for about 2 years until my doctor realize my condition is real. It effects your day to day life when you don't get the rest you need.
Hope this helps any and sorry for the long reply:- )
