View Full Version : Early HIV Symptoms? Scared!

Question regarding Early HIV Symptoms. I am a heterosexual male and have never done IV drugs. About 4 months ago I had unprotected sex with a female friend on one occasion. The vaginal sex only lasted about three minutes, but I gave her oral sex for a total of about 20 minutes. About 24-48 hours later, I developed thrush in the back of my throat and had a fever for about 3-4 days. I really did not think anything of it until recently, when I read that thrush may be a symptom of HIV. Panicked, I have been on the internet for three days and have found that the early "flu-like" symptoms of HIV would occur, if at all, 2-6 weeks after exposure and not within a day or two like I had, and in addition, that thrush developes from HIV way down the road, as in years after exposure. Now I know I should still get tested, but can I at least feel secure in knowing that the thrush and fever which happened within 24-48 hours after sex was not an early symptom of HIV? I also read you can easily catch oral thrush from having oral sex with a woman with a yeast infection. I am very worried and am praying that this is what caused the thrush. Thank you for your help.

no need to worry, thrush is only a symptom in the later years of HIV, when your immune system has become very weak. that takes at least a few years. not 48 hours ;) typically a fever sets in after infection to the virus, but that's about 2-6 weeks after. your risk was EXTREMELY low. i wouldn't worry about it.

Thank you. That's very encouraging. I took the test today and am supposed to get the results back in two days. I am hoping it was just a case of thrush from oral sex and a hard lesson learned. I can't stop thinking about it though. The fever is what is throwing me off I think. I have read that a fever can accompany severe thrush so I am praying that was the cause of it. I really appreciate your response.

Please help.

About the HIV-related fever, how long does it last? Because I had a one-day fever and headache on the 5th week of my mutual masturbation exposure from an HIV+ man.

Doctors said that you always assume that all your partners are HIV+. I did not take any risks----because you can get HIV only from anal sex, vaginal sex, and to a much lesser degree, oral sex. Kissing and mutual masturbation is safe, but since I am very hypochondriac guy, I was wondering if I had contracted HIV just from that mutual masturbation exposure.
So you have idea about an answer to my question, Heavensent102?

I've heard that it is indeed 24-72 hours after the initial exposure to the HIV virus, many get fever, swollen lymph nodes, night sweat, etc. If HIV enters the body.

The only way you could have possibly contracted this virus is if You touched his/her cum ( or vaginal secreations ) or if it got into any open cuts you might have had on your hands or anywhere... And if you are not even sure if this man/women whoever was posotive for Hiv... them I wouldnt worry. 1. you did not put yourself at a very high risk even if he was posotive 2. You dont even know for SURE if he was positive...

Thrush from oral sex was very common before AIDS and will continue to be common during and AFTER (one hopes) the AIDS pandemic passses into history!

Never use a symptom to diagnose early HIV...you just cannot do it!

Relax.

No real exposure warrented here. Thursh is not infection, you can not pass it back and forth.

Have you been taking antibiotics. If so than you can get thursh.

Your CD4 count has be to well below 200 to get thursh and candida infections.

You catch a fever form this person. HIV fever takes about 2 - 4 weeks. Not 24 or 72 hours, unless your immune compromised.

Please test for following: Chlaymedia, Gonorreha, HIV 1 - via EIA, Herpes 1 & 2 ( if any out break), CMV ( when antibodies are form, you become ill like how mentioned), Lympocyte Panel ( includes CD4 & CD8 counts ), Hep B .

Please get those test at 3 months. No need for Hep C test, due to no blood contact.

Good luck

Is it possible to get swollen lymph nodes 3-5 days after possible exposure?

and then fever/night sweats set in later?

please answer!

your own mind can make you physically ill after you think youve been exposed. this has happened to me a few times when i was stressing over it-- sore throat, runs, fever , etc. and it was my own mind making me sick. what works for me is eating foods i normally would not, drinking more, and just enjoying life while i wait on the tests. it helps to remember that you wont live forever anyway.

when the other person said that i freaked out, i ran a fever 48hrs after my exposure, although there was a condom invovled my throat began to hurt 24 hrs later and i woke up 48hrs later with an extreme fever that lasted sevearl days,
i'm totally freaking out, i didn't know these were symptoms till after my fever and throat and lymph nodes were swollen, so i know it couldn't have been my fear or panic...
