HELLO!!
I am scheduled for a LEEP procedure next week. Since it is an electrical current that is doing the cutting, do I need to remove my peircings? I have several in my ear, and also my navel that would require a special tool to take out. I left a msg with my dr., but the nurse has not gotten back with me yet. Just kinda wondering.

I have a belly ring as well and I did not take it out for my leep. The doctor didn't even mention it to me. I did not have earrings on, but it don't think it would have mattered if I did. Good luck with your surgery.

You're supposed to take out any and all jewelry before any type of surgery to prevent electrocution, as well as remove all finger/toenail polish too. I've had my navel pierced for about 8 years & can take it out with NO problem - how do you need a special tool in order to remove it?

I was awake for my leep, not sure if that mattered or not? I also had nail polish on. My doctor never mentioned anything about it, and I didn't even think of it. If he said something I would have taken it off. I guess I would take them all off just to be safe.

I'm also curious about the special tool to remove belly rings? I rarely take mine out, but when I do I just do it myself.

I have to use reverse-action pliers to open up the navel ring, because I have a 10 guage ring in there, which is 2 sizes bigger than 'normal'. Same with my earrings, they are 8 guage which is quite thick, I have to pry them open. My ear cartlidge (helix) piercing is an ordinary metal ring, but I hate messing with it because it is more tender, as its a fairly new piercing. The helix is the only one I would hate to take out.

Anyways, I did get some info this week from the out-patient place, which DOES want me to remove all piercings. My doctor prefers to do this LEEP at the outpatient surgery place instead of her office. The nurse said they would sedate me a little, but I would really prefer to be awake and remember things, and know what is going on. I am going to ask them if I can have little or no sedation., maybe they will let me do that. I gave birth to 3 kids naturally, no drugs, it seems like I could get thru this without being knocked out.

I hope I can leave my contact lenses in.

I have never had any kind of surgery before, so all this is really new to me.
I've got mild to moderate dysplasia,

happy thanksgivving!!

Ok, I didn't realize you have bigger gage rings. When my friend had surgery she had them put in a plastic rod to help keep a new piercing open, maybe you could do that with your cartlidge? Also, if they won 't let you have piercings in then they most likely won't let you keep contacts in either.

I was awake for my leep, and I don't understand why you would need to be put out. You don't feel anything after the shots. Maybe because I was awake and that is why my doctor wasn't concerned with my piercings, nail polish, etc? I'm going to ask why when I go in for my follow-up.

This was my first surgery as well and as far as surgery goes though this is pretty mild. Good luck and keep us updated on your progress.

well, the nurse told me that they used to do this in the office, but that it took too long because some women would get nervous about the procedure. So now they do them all in the outpatient hospital, cause it takes less time that way. I ended up having to reschedule the appt to december, I'm kinda glad.
I think I am going to get the acrylic rod to put in my cartlidge, thats a good idea.

I was completely put out for my LEEP and that's why I had to take off all polish and piercings. You can use a plastic / acrylic rod to keep the piercing open. It just can't be anything metal. If you do have to take out your piercing's, just remember, the actual surgery itself is only about 30 minutes long.

Do you know or remember how long it took you to come out of the anesthesia?
what kind of anesthesia did you have?

I don't remember which anesthesia I had, but I do remember that she injected it into my IV and it felt really cold going up my arm. I was out before the "coldness" reached my shoulder. It doesn't take very long to come out of it. I woke up, started crying because I was so happy that I wasn't dead, went to the bathroom and left to go home. You will feel extremely tired for like a week afterwards.
