Hi, I'm new here and scared. My nipple has had a discharge for 3 wks. I went to the drs and they said it was probably nothing, and to watch it. But during the exam she said she found a small lump that was most likely fibrocycsti(sp?). My breast is sore, it's itchy and burns. Has anyone else experienced this and should I get a second opinion? is this a sign of cancer?

What is your age? Chances are it is nothing but since you sound so worried I'd definitely get another opinion. Did the doctor at least say for you to have a mammogram or maybe an ultrasound? I've had nipple discharge before and it was diagnosed as mastitis(?) - basically an inflammation of the milk duct. It took quite some time for it to clear up. If my memory serves me right - he did put me on antibiotics and I had to go in again in 2 weeks. He told me that if it weren't cleared up by then he'd order further tests. You can do a search online and see if mastitis (not sure of the spelling) matches what you are going through. Take Care...and happy Thanksgiving! Scarlett

Hi ScarlettGA,

I'm 34 yrs old and have had this problem for over three weeks. My family doctor gave me antibiotics but it didn't clear it up. They did say I could have a mammogram but I had to fight for it. Thanks for your reply. Have a great Thanksgiving!

HI

With a discharge and a lump, you should most certainly not 'let it go' and 'wait and see'. Your doc is wrong.

While it's entirely possible that it's an infected cyst or gland, it warrants further investigation. Breast cancer at your age isn't that unusual at all, and it's just plain foolish for your doc not to do further testing! Even the drainage can be biopsied (mine was)

My doc ordered a mammogram IMMEDIATELY when I reported the drainage! And I was under 40 at the time.

Good luck
