hallucinations on waking are not unusual and not to be worried about, stress and fatigue can cause hallucinations

If you have hallucinations when you are about to fall asleep then it's called hypnagogic hallucinations. If you have hallucinations when about to wake or very shortly after then it's called hypnopompic hallucinations. Both of them are not necessarily 'normal' but it is fairly common especially for people with sleep disorders. If you have hallucinations while fully awake and going about your daily routines then that's something else completely different like schizophrenia or psychotic depression.

There is a condition called sleep paralysis- I get it on occasion where you wake up but you cant move your body and it is common to hear noises, voices, etc, and see things as well. Your mind is still in "dream state" i guess. I have woken up before though when I didnt have the sleep paraylysis and see things right when I open my eyes.

Wow I have experience this but never knew what it was. Before I goto sleep, I have this recurring hallucination: there is some demon/ghost floating right above my bed and has me "captured" under its spell and I cant move and it is choking the life out of me somehow. I struggle to "wake up" from this for a while until I finally shake it off, and soon after I usually fall asleep.

The ghost/demon part is not always there, but usually it feels like I am semi-asleep and there is some scary feeling that I am trapped in a dream and can't get out. It's hard to tell if it's a nightmare or not, because it always feels like it happens just before falling asleep, but I am never fully sure about when during the course of the night it actually occurs.

*phew* I'm glad I just wrote that, I know it sounds silly =)

I've had this as well. It's comon among folks with mental disorders and or sleep disorders. I's basically when your mind and body are out of phase and not coordinated in it's waking and sleeping. Some people experience buzzing or tingling sensations too when this happens. I did some research on this and basically everyone has sleep paralysis otherwise people will be always running around while asleep acting out their dreams, kicking hitting etc... The chemical signal goes out during sleep and paralyses our bodies so we don't act out our dreams and move alot. The condition we have that is called sleep paralysis should actually be called sleep phase disturbance or something like that because your concious mind wakes up before the signal for the body to move kicks in. Also people have trouble breathing sometimes because when in concious state we usually breath with our chests and not our belly. While sleeping it's opposite we breathe belly not chest. So when our concious mind wakens we try to take breaths with our chest like we were awake but we can't so we feel like we're choking but we're not. It's just our bodies are still breathing with the belly or diaphram. Sometimes this translates into hallucinations of someone sitting on you or choking you but it's not, you're basically just freaking yourself out due to not knowing how to transition from one breathing type to another. One tip I would have is to not force yourself awake and scare yourself. Recognize it and slowly try to move your pinky finger or toes first then you'll come out of it better instead of freaked out.

Yes, and it is very common to feel that "evil presence" as well. I think they call it the Old Hag or soemthing. Usually sleep paralysis happens either when you are falling asleep or when you wake up. If you look up "sleep paralysis" online you will find a lot of information. You are not alone and how scary that must have been for you not knowing it is just a sleep condition! This is why some people might reprt abductions, aliens, demons, ghosts.....becuase they are in this state and are basically just hallucinating. I have heard whispers, vibrations, the sound of someone in my house when no one really was, laughing, I have felt like there were 100 people in my bedroom...you know like the chatter of an auditorium or something, I have also felt an evil presence float over me then beside me and say to me "what do you think you are doing?" SCARY! It hasnt happened to me in a while but when it did I would recognize it as sleep paralysis but still feel scared. You just feel like you wont wake up- that was the scaryist part for me. And I like try to scream but I cant. Anyway - you arent alone!

I had this a lot when I was a little kid now I just see things out of the corner of my eye and sometimes hear voices but it all just my imagination. I have OCD and I think the voices I hear are more internal than actual voices if you get what I mean.
