Hey Everyone -
Can you still smoke and take the pill at the same time? Like I am only 19 years old and I still want to smoke while taking the pill but I'm not sure if it's REALLY dangerous or not?
Of course the doctors and websites are going to say that smoking is bad while taking the pill cause it increases your chance of stroke or a blood clot, especially for women over 35... but is it THAT serious? Or can I still smoke and take the pill?
Anyone else in here smoke and take the pill at the same time?
Like think about it, I know or see millions of women that smoke, and you think that only a small percent of them are on the pill? I don't think so, I think most are. So if anyone can just tell me if smoking and taking the pill ISN'T as SERIOUS as they make it sound, that would be great!
Thanks so much! :)

because of blood clot issues it's NOT a good idea to smoke on the pill. granted, it's not a very good idea to smoke anyways so i wouldn't promote it whether you were on the pill or not.

You should never smoke and be on the pill because of the high chance of blood clots. Although many young women under 35 are fine while doing it many are not and experience blood clots and strokes at really young ages. Cigarettes and oral contraceptives don't mix well. Even smokers who take the low-dose pill are putting unnecessary stress on their hearts. There are many other birth control options for smokers.

i dont know i smoke and have been on the pill for almost 2 in a half years something like that i know i shouldnt cuz of risk and all that stuff i thought it was worse if u smoke and on the pill at 35 and over?
Thank you all for replying..
So I guess i am going to have to quit, cause I don't wanna die yet.
This is going to be hard ....
Actually, would it kill me to have one smoke like once in a while? Or is that same as being a regular smoker, in terms of having a blood clot, stroke, etc?
Thanks! :)

It is worse if you are over 35, there is a much higher risk and chance of developing blood clots and strokes. Studies have shown though that this risks can happen to people under 35 who are on the pill and smoke.

I think a smoke here and there will not hurt you. The reason for not smoking is because its putting on extra strain on your heart that doesn't mix with the hormones in the pill. I believe only regular smokers need to be careful of this.

The increased health risks due to smoking and taking oral contraceptives are significant enough that by the time a woman reaches the age of 30-35, most doctors won't give her a prescription. That should tell you everything right there. It is NOT a good idea. There are some risks associated with taking BCP even without smoking, why would you want to make them worse?
There is a definite connection between smoking, BCP and increased incidences strokes, heart attacks and blood clots. Do you have any idea how many thousands of women get blood clots every year? Anyway, at your age, a lot of women think 'so what if my risk factor is 30 times higher if I smoke, it's so low at this age anyway. But as you get older, that risk factor goes way up. Think about it. Also, most women are probably thinking 'heart attack' and find it hard to imagine, but think about the blood clots, those do happen to young women, and once you have one, you can never go on the pill again, and may end up taking blood-thinning medication for the rest of your life.
btw, just because there are lots of women who smoke and take BCP, doesn't mean you should think "well, then it must be okay". They are assuming the risks. There are lots of people who drink and drive too, doesn't mean there's no increased risk to that either. It's your choice.

There is more of a higher risk with women over 35 but it is a risk that affects all women who smoke and are on the pill regardless of age.
