View Full Version : Should I be worried?

I am 33 and have had stomach problems for years - went to a Gastro about 6 years ago and he ran a gamut of tests including xrays, CT scans and Barium enema with air contrast. Never found any cause for my stomach pain besides possibly IBS. I know my little brother has the same problems I do - such as after a heavy fatty meal I sometimes run to the bathroom and explode!

Well off and on for those 6 years I have had bouts of stomach pain, diharrea and cramping and also wierd chest pain (seems to be related to my stomach). It almost seems as if food gets stuck behind my chest wall?? I can feel my digestive track move all the food (painfully) through (lots of cramping and gurgling). I have also seen blood on my toilet paper maybe 4 or 5 times in those 6 years. Now for the last month or so I have nausea, fatigue, bloating and gas pains that seem to persist. It started right when I got a cold (don't know if the two are related). I have tried taking pepto, mylanta, anti-gas pills, to no avail. My stools look fairly normal and I haven't seen any blood in months - I did a FOBT (home kit) which came up negative.

My big worry is the big "C". My wife tells me all the time about her friend who was 33 who was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer while having no prior symptoms. I don't know of anyone in my family who has had it. My question is - what could be causing my pain and is it feasible that I might have colon cancer even after a clean barium enema 6 years ago? BTW - at the time I had the BE I had some bleeding on my toilet paper as well. Thanks for any and all advice!

Hi there hawkfish. Your symptoms (especially the explosive diarrhea after a fatty meal) may be indicative of gall bladder problems. Do a web search on Habba syndrome and bile salt diarrhea and see if the symptoms fit you. The nausea, gassiness, etc. can also go along with GB problems.

You may also have some absorption problems, but I can't offer much advice about that since I really don't know about it.

Sounds like a trip back to the doctor is in order. Blood on the toilet tissue could be hemmoroids (sp?) especially if it is bright red when you wipe.

If you're concerned about your bowels, you need to see the doctor. No concern should be ignored even if it turns out to be nothing more serious than IBS.

Good luck and keep us posted,
Katie G
