Hi everyone I am worried about my baby. Over the thanksgiving weekend we all contracted that 24 hr stomach flu. It was horrible. Well my son got it too which has been terrible. He doesn't want to eat/drink he just vomits and has diarreah. We thought he was getting better yesterday even though he hardly had any formula. But last night he started vomiting again. This all started on saturday by the way. Well we took him to the doctor last night and he thought he was dehydrated and started an IV and checked his blood to see how dehydrated he was. It turned out he wasn't dehydrated that badly but they want me to follow up with his doctor today. Today he has had 9 ounces of formula and sips of water which is an improvement so far. Has anyone had this happen to your baby? When do babies get over this? This is the third day and I just want him back to normal!!!

DS got a stomach bug last summer -- kept vomiting over my shoulder. Pretty much just fed him pedialyte all day on the first day. Made the mistake of thinking he was feeling better and gave him some formula. So I just put white grape juice or pedialyte in bottle and fed it to him constantly over a two day period. We tucked him in our bed an one of us pretty much just kept trying to get him to drink sips of juice. He got sick on a Friday and by Saturday night he was better. Still had the runs on Sunday, but was able to keep down some solids and formula.
Out of the 5 kids in his class room (baby room at day care) three ended up in the hospital with iv's. I think we were okay 'cuz we kept pushing fluids.

Thanks ratatosk. I was giving him formula the whole time just no solids. The doctor last night told me to give him pedialite and mix it in his bottles of formula. So do you think I should just discontinue formula all together? I wish I did that when this whole thing started but I didn't have any juice/pedialite and thought pedialite was for toddlers.

I worried so much about DS losing weight that I started feeding him formula after he'd gone several hours without vomiting. And that managed to stay down. He just didn't drink very much of it at first. My problem was that I got a bit overzealous and tried baby food mac & cheese, which was his favorite and his system must not have been ready and he threw up for the first time in about 6 hours. BTW, pedialyte also makes freezy pops. Might be something to try, too!

Has his pediatrician checked for rotovirus? This happened to my son just before his first BD and his symptoms were just as you are describing. If the doc has not checked for this, it definitely needs to be done.Good luck,Marcia

My son had a stomach virus around the same age. I stopped giving him formula and started giving him pedialyte and diluted apple juice (though you'll want to stop the apple juice if he gets diahreah) just to keep fluids in him. Every time I would give him formula he'd throw up. Milk is really bad for that. Most docs here recommend you discontinue formula during a stomach virus and concentrate on other fluids. He went 2 to 3 days with very little formula then developed a minor case of diahreah. He was just fine. He actually coped with the illnes much better than we did! As far as the pedialyte, I gave it to my son as early as 4 months. He contracted strep throat and wouldn't swallow more than once or twice without screaming so I just gave him a couple sips of pedialyte every few minutes. He was very sick and misDX'd at the ER (over the weekend. They said he was just teething.) but I insisited that my baby was sick and got them to send me home with antibiotics. By Monday when I followed up with his doc, I was told that the pedialyte and the insistance on the antibiotics was the only thing that kept him out of the hospital.
He definitely sounds like he's on the mend though. I'd say as long as he's keeping down the formula he's on the mend and not to worry too much. These things happen.
My son also got rotovirus at 12 months. The symptoms of that include digestive disturbances and cold like sypmtoms. In his case, he had a horrible thick runny nose and red watery eyes. It lasted about a week. He didn't vomit as much with that one, but I hear some babies do.
