HI
I have never posted on this thread before, just the Addiction and recovery board...well, I had huge help there and have been clean from my addiction for about a month and have no urge to go back to that.
anyway, now I need to tackle the smoking.
I put a patch on today, and it hasnt really been bad at all.
I just keep telling myself that a cigg. isnt gonna solve any
problems that I might have.
And how bad it is of course for my health.
I have 3 great kids and a great hubby, and even though
he hates the smoking he still has been supportive.
I quit for 5 years before, then about a year and a half ago I started again
(closet smoker).
When I didnt smoke, I HATED the thought of smoking and rarely thought about it. All it took was one puff one night, and bingo, right back at it at about a pack a day, sneaking around.
I dont want to do it anymore!!!!!!!!!!!
I am going to stick with the patches. does anyone have any bright ideas for me?
thanks

Welcome Julie--
Welcome to the smoking board!
Congratulations on getting your other addiction under control, that's wonderful! :jester: That is really scarey to me when I read stories like yours, when one quits for so many years, and then suffers a relapse! But it does teach me that we are all so vulnerable to relapsing ourselves. Guess we should never get too cocky, or relaxed into thinking that we have this problem licked. :nono: It's like the saying goes, "you're only one drag away from a pack a day". Just keep in mind that you were successful in quitting before, so you can and WILL do it again.
Yes, the patches work VERY well. I quit first with the gum, and then went to the patches. I really found the patches to work better, (for me anyway) than the gum. Probably because it keeps a more steady level of nicotene in your bloodstream, than the other aides. (gum, lozenges). Make sure that you remove your patch at night, as they are known to give people nightmares or very vivid dream that may disturb your sleep.
Keep yourself busy, and your mind occupied. Learn some relaxation techniques, whether deep breathing, yoga, meditating, etc. Draw up a list of all the reasons that you want to quit...sounds like you have some good ones already,,,your husband and kids. :) Come to this board any time you feel you need to vent, ask questions, etc.
Best of luck to you!

HI
How long has it been since you quit smoking?
I went to the store tonight and bought some sugarfree candy to suck on.
Its nice to hear that the patches worked for you.
That gives me hope.
Anyway I will let you know how I do tomorrow. hehe

Hi Julie--
14 months, 6 days, 9 1/2 hours now. ;)
Hard candies are good to use at first. I also liked bubblegum. Another gal that used to come here liked Fireballs. I just had one of those, (given to me by my manicurist) and they are really good!
Yes,let us know how you're doing...

HI Deda
Wow thats a long time! You even count the hours? wow! neat.
How much were you smoking a day? Me, it was getting way out of hand
up to over a pack a day.
Woke up this morning and put another patch on. I took it off last night cause I didnt want to have any strange dreams, but I had a few anyway. haha
My other addiction was pain pills---up to over 20+ a day.
I am planning on staying busy( hopefully)if I can force myself to.
There is plenty of cleaning to do around the house and starting to decorate
for Christmas.
Plus I have a 5 year old girl who keeps me busy.Plus I babysit.
I will read the Bible, Psalms, a little throught the day.
There are always going to be problems coming up, and I just tell myself a cigg. is not going to take any problems away. Plus right now the thought of smoking makes me sick so that is a good sign, right?
It is just such a bad addictive habit. YUCK
thanks for your support.

It's easy to count the hours, as I quit at 12 noon, on the ***. ;)
I smoked right around a pack a day. (the last year before I quit, as I had quit buying cartons of cigs, to try and make it "more trouble") But there were times before that, when I smoked 1 1/2 to 2 pks a day! More problems in life... more cigs. How dum..
Sounds like you have a busy enough life with little ones, and baby sitting, to keep your mind off smoking. What a great distraction, really. If you feel like smoking, go play with the kiddies, or read them a story. You'll now have more time to spend with your kids! That time is so precious! Smoking was such a waste of time!!!!
I like your idea of reading from Psalms. :) Prayer was an important factor in helping me with this quit. I'd advise anyone who is a believer to try it.
I'm happy for you, Julie, that you are doing SO well. Keep up the good work, girl! And reward yourself every now and then! :)

Oh Julie, that's okay...it's happened to a lot of us, including moi! :D Just pick yourself back up and START IT OVER again. How long had you gone, again? It sounds like you left your home planning to run to mom's to get some cigs, as you removed your patch first. (No, you won't stroke out or anything, as long as you took the patch off) Think about it all, do you really want to quit? Are you 100% ready?
Don't feel bad, and remember, it takes most of us a few tries before we succeed in quitting. Don't give up. :nono:
((((hugs))))

Deda;
This morning I got up and put on a patch.
When hubby got home for lunch, I was really craving a cigg, so I was going to
take it off, and um, I reached over to take it off (I had put it on my lower left back right above my jeans)..........and it had fallen off. Has that ever happend to you?
I looked all around the house and I am worried becuase I have a 5 yr old plus a 3 yr old that i babysit. I even went up to the bathroom and stripped off my clothes to see if I could find it (haha)- Nothing. I could see the red square where I had put it on this morning.
I am just worried sick that one of my girls will get into it if it is somewhere around the house so I need to keep a close eye on them........I have looked everywhere. I did go and run a few errands do you think it may have fallen off then?
This morning I was sitting on the floor bending over a bunch going through old
papers so maybe that loosened it up????????
any ideas???? Where is that stupid patch? I am freakin'

Oh oh! All I can say, Julie, is keep looking around. It will probably show up sometime today. :) I had never wore my patches anywhere but on my upper arm, so I never, (well, maybe once) had them fall off. I don't think the kids will be harmed if they find it. Just tell them, mommie's looking for her band-aid, and to let you know when they see it, maybe. See if it's stuck inside your jeans.
Let us know what happens...
Hugs! :)

Hey Julie...
I just read your post again, and must have read it too fast yesterday, as I didn't notice until now that you said you were craving a smoke, and was taking it off to have a cig. I guess you realize tho, that you were craving a cig, because your patch had fallen off, and who knows how long it was off of you? Why aren't you wearing them on your arm? At least if it's on your arm, you're more likely to notice if it does fall off. So, did you ever find it? Did you end up putting another one on? I hope you got things worked out.
Let us know, and take care. :)

HI Deda
Update on julie: NO GOOD!
I went that 30 hours or so weeks ago and then, slowly started back up again.
Now I am practically chain smoking. I finally decided to smoke outside though (garage, actually) because I was smoking in the upstairs bathroom.
The dumb part of it is that I have Influenza A right now (hubby too)
and the smoking is making my sore throat and cough worse, but I keep doing it.
Figure that one out.
CONGRATS to you and everyone who has quit somoking on this board, cause I know
it is soooo hard.

I was on the gum for years and I became addicted to it. I have tried the patch 3 different times, but it never helps. I get the same affect putting a band-aid on my arm. Yesterday I bought a bottle of pills in the health section at Bashas called "Smoking Withdrawal Relief." It's produced by Natra-Bio. There are 90 tablets for $7. Ingredients are: black spruce, Indian tobacco, tobacco extract, quaker button, and St Ignatius bean. It's helping so far.

Awww, I'm sorry Julie. Please don't give up though. Takes some, (most of us), many, many quits before we get it right. (I've done it around 10 x, and this will be my last) About the flu, I used to do the same thing, smoke all the way through it. Try again Julie.
Like Winston Churchill said, "Ne-vah, ne-vah, ne-vah give up". You can do it, I KNOW you can! :nono:

I
Thanks.
This might sound strange has this happened to anyone:
seems like when I try to quit or want to quit I end up smoking
more; like 2 packs a day? That is what I have been doing lately.
It makes no sense! Espcially since I have been sick.
Thanks.

I was a very heavy smoker and started using the patch on 26/12. I left it on overnight - I'll not to that again. The warning about vivid dreams and nightmares is there, don't ignore it.
