A friend of mine read an article that said a couple of teaspoons of Apple Cider Vinegar a day can help with Acid Reflux. So I started diggin around for more info on this and found a couple of articles that claim this to be true. Not too mention all of the other health benefits supposedly linked to Apple Cider Vinegar.
Has anyone tried this?

I have been wondering that myself. I also wonder if lemon juice and honey - or honey alone - could help heal gastritis. I have been diagnosed with erosive gastritis, duodenitis and supposedly Barrett's esophagus. I would really prefer to use natural means to deal with this. Does anyone have any information on this? I read an article in prevention magazine that honey (the dark kind) helps the stomach. I use apple cider vinegar (3 teaspoons) a day to help with my cholesterol, and weight loss. I have read articles that acv can ease acid reflux. I don't know if its true, but i rarely have stomach ailments since taking the apple cider vinegar for almost a yr.

Thanks for the info. I think that it's worth a shot. JTU91952, do you buy ACV at the grocery store or do you get the organic kind?

I drink ACV. I felt great when I was drinking it then stopped, so now I am back to drinking it. I use Braggs. From what I understand you need the kind with Mother in it. The kind from the grocery has been fitered too much.

Hi. I just wanted to post a update. For about 2 weeks now I've been drinking the ACV daily and it is helping! I was doing 1 tablespoon mixed w/ 4 oz of water 2 times daily and I think that was too much. It burned my stomach. Now I do it once a day and it is helping. I haven't taken any Previcid and I've only taken 2 Rolaids after eating pizza. I used to take about 4-6 Rolaids or Tums daily.
Upon reading more about ACV, it seems to be helpful for many things; sinus problems, skin problems, joint pain, heart health.
It's tastes like hell, but if you gulp it down real fast it's not so bad. Reminds me of younger days when I could shots of Jaegermeister or Tequlia. Haha.

What I wondered was how long do you take the apple cider vinegar before eating? I've been diagnosed with silent reflux and have all the signs. Always clearing my throat, can feel that famous lump, a bit of what seems to be post nasal drip going on at times, actually feel things going down at times, or just sitting there, no indigestion (which is why it's called silent reflux), dry throat sometimes. I've been on Omeprazole for 4 weeks, and at first seemed to be clearing it up, but last week has come back with a vengeance. If you read, you see that drugs only mask the symptoms, like paracetamol for a headache. I'd like to make my digestive system healthier.
So I've been and bought Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar and am going to start on it. I too have read excellent reports about how it has helped people, and the benefits of it. Health shop suggested I start with a small dose of 1 tsp a day with honey and warm water, for a week or two, then build to 2 tsps.
For weight loss it is suggested you take it 30 mins before a meal. That was the same time frame for the Omeprazole, so wondered what others did and how it worked best.
Do others find stress makes the reflux worse?

judenz, the lady at the health food store told me to just drink it with my meal.
lannen, my acv bottle says to use 1 or 2 teaspoons with 8 oz water. maybe if you were using 1 tablespoon with 4 oz of water is why it hurt your stomach. maybe you could go back to a couple times a day.
i just started with supper and i am anxious to see results.

I started today - health shop told me you should always build up slowly. I took 1 teaspoon ACV with 1 tsp of manuka honey in hot water, and it made a pleasant drink. Did that a little whlie before I ate. Will do that for a week, then build to 2 tsps, then after another week to 3 tsps and stay with that.
A friend of mine said she takes lemon and water each day to avoid kidney infection, as the lemon breaks down the acid. I figure vinegar has similar properties and hopefully will do that in our 'gizzards' lol My daughter-in- law who is a nurse did say it would be a good idea to have some acidopholus yoghurt as well during the day.
I had 2 Omeprazole left and gave up on them. Today reflux has been better, but could be down to not taking pill. Anyway if I can improve my digestive system I'll be delighted. I can live with the lump feeling, it's the feeling things go down or just sitting there that gets me. Do you notice things like crackers or potato chips/crisps are worse for seeming to get stuck. We could write a novel about it. So here's hoping the ACV does wonderful things for us all.

My husband has high cholesterol. Since you have been taking the apple cider vinegar for almost a year, has it lowered your cholesterol? Were you having stomach problems before starting on the vinegar regimen? Do you take the 3 teaspoons of vinegar in a glass of water once a day? Before meals or with meals - or between meals? Or does it matter? Thanks for the information and best wishes with your health. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays! sapphire12112

Would Apple Cider vinegar pills work the same?

Jude-I have all the same symptoms as you and I've been to a ent Dr. and also to a naturopathic Dr. and both say that it is reflux as well as stress causing it. It's hard to believe. I will have to try the vinegar too. Right now I'm on some homeopathic remedies as well as completely changing me eating habits for better digestion.

jhoward, i was wondering how you were doing since you started the nexium. your problems and mine sounded so familiar. so i guess the nexium didn't do the trick alone. i wondered because prevacid didn't solve mine either.
my problems have gotten worse again. i cannot believe alone it is stress. keep in touch! Merry Christmas!

An update on how I am doing since starting the Apple Cider Vinegar. Started it a week ago - 1 tsp a day so far with 2/3 tsp manuka honey in hot water taken anywhere from 10 mins to 30 mins before breakfast. Am very impressed with the results so far . My reflux is improved by about 70% I reckon. Still have that lump feeling ( but only mildly), and more like the post nasal mucous feeling. Dry throat has gone, and am very rarely aware of that awful 'going down' feeling when I swallow. So in next few days I'll increase to a 2nd tsp, and see how that goes.
As a matter of interest, I decided to not take it yesterday and dry throat was back as was feeling of lump off to side. So fingers crossed that ACV might be a good alternative.
I think stress does make a huge difference, and also wanting to do some work on that area of life as well. I know a few people who have suffered with reflux and then it has gone, makes me believe it is related to stressful times in our lives.
JHoward, am interested that you have sought help and are trying alternative therapies, and also looking at better eating to improve your digestion. I'd like to read more about that, as the meds only cover the symptoms. Not sure where to look for articles on good eating for better digestion. Good on you and hope it does great things for you.

Hey sorry it took me so long to get back here. Anyway, I only took the nexium for 5 days because I was still nursing my baby. So I went off of it, weaned my baby and then went on Aciphex for 30 days. It didn't help at all. So I went to the naturopath Dr. and am taking pancreatic enzymes, anxiety pills (basically magnesium and other natrual things), some little pills that go under your tongue, acidopholus, and then an IV treatment once a week that is full of vitamins! I have stopped eating all dairy and wheat flour which is what causes all of that post nasal drip phlegm stuff and I'm doing much better! I still have moments where I feel a weird feeling in my throat but for the most part I'm doing better. I'll keep you posted though!

i am glad you are feeling better. during Christmas, we had bad weather, so i wasn't walking. i had started really having problems with the feeling in the throat and feeling in chest, i guess where the spasm acts up. anyway, i started walking some and that too has helped. so i guess a combination of all these remedies and some exercise will give us all some relief.
