When I went to my Gyno in April for a regular exam she suggested I start taking an anti-depressant to help with mood swings and depression before my periods. I told her I wasn't interested but I think I have changed my mind. I can't remember the name of the medication she suggested. Does anyone else take medication for the symptoms of PMS?

At the time of my exam I wasn't having a problem with depression so I was shocked that she even suggested it.

Thanks for the reply. I have started taking Paxil 15mg. Hoping that it works. This last episode of PMS was really bad, and I knew I couldn't go through that again not only for myself but for my family and work. I love my job and I was so afraid I was going to say something to someone to get me into alot of trouble. Hope the paxil will kick in before next month!!!!

i get really bad cramps too, usually a week before i start and week after. i have really bad mood swings, infact so bad people was scared of me and looked at me like my head was going to go around in circles. i mentioned this to my doctor and she placed me on 20 mg of Sarafrem. i couldn't beleave how mellow i became and i didn't have any more cramps in fact i wouldn't know when i would start my period until that day. then my "insurance" said i could use that any more because there was a gerneric out, gggggrrrrr, so i had to switch to that. lets put it this way i was back to my old grouchy cramping ways. so my doctor switch me to zoloft, it works some but i rather be taken Sarafrem for PMDDS. so you are not alone. :bouncing:

it seems as though the older I get the worse it gets for me too. especially cause I have ocd. I am thinking about getting back on paxil to calm me down a bit. I get really depressed and unsure of myself around pms time. Good luck let us know how you are doing and know that you are definitaly not alone in this.

Thanks for all the replys. I don't know if it is just my imagination, but since I have been taking the Paxil (approx 1 week) I am feeling so much better. I know it is suppose to take 6 weeks but my attitude has improved so much, I just hope it lasts. It is so hard to deal with these moods associated with PMS. I know it is not only difficult for us but all the people around us that have to put up with our moodiness.

Good Luck to all!!

Yes, and some gynocologist will prescribe antidepressants just for pms, which can be taken a week before the cycle starts. I thought it strange too, but gynocologists are suggesting this and say it works.
