Has anyone else ever got these? I have a constant headache in the back of my head. Its there on waking. Its hard to describe, its not throbbing. Just a ache and been going on for a week. Sometimes it feels like it radiates to my neck. Im thinking its just a tension headache from what im read, but my dad did have a brain tumour (Acoustic neuroma) so im a bit concerned. Im only 26.

Thanks

Andy

Hi,

Just to stop you worrying, my friend had a headache like that for about two weeks, she's not the worrying kind so didn't go to the doctor and it went away. I get headaches at the back of my head on and off. (usually on the right side for some reason) I had them constantly for nearly two weeks not long ago with dizziness and went to the doctor because I was sure I had a brain tumor. (My first boyfriend had a brain tumor. I know we weren't related but it makes it more real) but the doctor did tests and concluded it was stress. It's amazing what stress can do! I found it hard to believe there was nothing physically wrong with me but I don't have one now so he must be right. Get it checked out in any case, it's probably nothing to worry about but it will make you feel better. :)

Are you using a really high pillow?? i used to get those because my pillows were like mount everest and having your head at the weird and unnatural angle puts a lot of stress on those muscles.

I use a memory pillow that is thicker at the front and back to support the neck and thinner in the middle for the head to go. I've been much better since I've used it. Every now and then - while I'm asleep - I move over to my other pillow (a regular one) and wake up all stiff, achy and with a headache.

Sometimes if I have a bad neck i use NO pillow at all and try to lay on my back - it really helps.

I get that a LOT! In my case it's always tension. That's actually how I identify the type of headache I have. Pain in the back of the head, right at the base connecting to the neck, is tension and pain in the face (forehead, eyes and nose, but spreading to entire face) is sinus.

Massage therapy works really well for tension headaches. Even if you just use a massaging shower head with the water as hot as you can stand it. I just stand there for as long as I possibly can with the water beating on my neck. Or a hot bath sometimes helps a lot.

Good luck!

Hi

Thanks. I came to that conclusion too. My headaches are much less again at the moment, i tried the less pillow trick and that seemed to help. Went to bed with a hot water bottle as well and that definetly did. Thanks for all your suggestions!

Try and remember, that the muscles around the neck and head are always in flexion..........these keep your head up, so it's no surprise that once strained or injured, it is very difficult to rest them properly and the healing process can take months and you will always get flare-ups periodically and coupled with the fact that there are endless nerves in the same area, this is why you may develop other symptoms.

Hi Andy,
Have you seen a neurologist? With your family history (father) I would recommend you see one. Some brain tumors have a family link, although I am not sure about Acoustic Neuromas. It would be best to rule it out through an MRI. Wishing you the best, Dodi

No, i havent seen a neurologist. I dont feel i need to. I havent consulted my GP about it either. If it gets worse then i will, but theres no point in getting wound up and worried about it just yet. I will consult my doctor though if it is persisting after chrsitmas. I noticed coming this morning that its like a bruised feeling in the back of my head. When i lay down the pressure causes it to hurt a bit, but to the touch it doesnt. Weird. I havent bashed it or anything. Will see how it goes.

Thanks

Andy
