Hi Marti or anyone else who may know.... I have deep ridges in my finger nails. I think they have always been there to some extent, but they seem to be getting deeper and causing my nails to split.
What causes these ridges and how can I help to get rid of them???? Thanks!

You can never get rid of the ridges because they are the rails and grooves upon which the nail plate rides forward. As we age, or as our nails become dried out, the rails and grooves appear on the surface of the nail plate as ridges. If we have our hands in water a lot, work with paper or textiles a lot or use strong solvents without wearing gloves (this includes household cleaning solutions), then these chemicals can dry out the nail plate to the degree where the ridges develop.

I would suggest wearing gloves when using household cleaning solutions or when having your hands in wter. I would also suggest that you get some Botanical Oil from the nail department of Sally Beauty Supply, or Solar Oil in fine nail salons or through Ulta Cosmetic outlets nationwide. Apply a little bit to each nail, then massage into the nails and cuticles at LEAST twice daily and always after having your hands in water.

Either of the oils will condition, moisturize and heal the nails and skin because they both contain jojoba oil and vitamin E.

Hi there. I get ridges, too. I also get bumps.

People, including doctors, have told me it is cleaning works and chemicals, but I do none of those. I think they just say that because they don't know what causes it. I do not do work with my hands at all.

My grandmother used to get them. So, for me, I believe it is genetic.

If you are a man, you can buff them down. If you are a woman, you can buff them down and use a ridge-filler nail polish. I use Rimmel ridge-filler in light pink.

There is nothing you can do about them. They are like curly hair. Likewise, your finger have ridges, grooves, or bumps. Just think of it as curly finger nails. Not exactly as pretty as curly hair, but, know this, a lot of people have them, so you are not alone in nail grossness. I have them, too.

Some people think it may be associated with Raynaud's or bad circulation. So if you smoke, stop. If you don't exercise, maybe exercise will help.

I know that I've noticed that in the summer months, my nails get better. I have figured that colder weather restricts the blood flow a bit.
