I've been having these "episodes" of pretty bad abdominal pain, and when I recently went to the doctor about it, he could only guess that it might be irritable bowel, which I don't think it is. I'll describe my symptoms, and I would appreciate it if anyone could give me a clue as to what this could be.
The pain started in May. It happened once in May, twice in June, once in July, August, and September. It starts just after I wake up. I feel fine until I go to have a bowel movement, and then I am suddenly in this enormous amount of pain. It feels like a searing, burning pain in my pelvic area. And every time I think I'm done going to the bathroom, I have to go again. My stools are normal, though, it's not diarhea. During this time, I also get really sweaty, clammy, and nauseus. A few of the times I've thrown up once.
The severe burning pain usually goes away after about an hour, and for the next two or three days I am left with a tight, painful cramping feeling in the area surrounding my bellybutton. I also tend to feel kind of sick all over, like achy muscles, mild headaches... When this hits, I am usually unable to do anything except lay around, but once it's gone, I'm totally fine again.
The reasons I'm pretty sure it's not related to my period are because 1) Four out of the six times this has happened, I had just gotten OFF my period, and 2) The pain I feel doesn't feel anything like menstrual cramps.
My doctor gave me some medicine that will only work if this is irritable bowel syndrome, so I guess I'll find out next month if that's what it is.
If anyone can help me out on this, I'd really appreciate it.

When I ovulate each month it is very painfull in my pelvic area and I feel sharp pains up my butt and walk bent over. Bowel movements are also painfull this time of the month for me. I feel like my whole uterus is falling out.
Maybe you are ovulating.

Thanks for your response.
I had considered that, too, I just thought it strange that I would start having this pain just five months ago, when I've probably been ovulating for years. Another thing, too, though, is that I said that four out of the six times this happened right after my period ended, but the last time it happened, September 27, was the same day I started my period. The pain just seems to happen so randomly.
But I, too, feel like because this comes once a month, it must somehow be related to my cycle, but there just doesn't seem to be a pattern to it.

If I were you, I would go back to my GP and insist on being refered to a Consultant at your local Hospital. Some of the symptoms that you describe are the same that I experienced when I had Ulcerative Colitis. Of course, I'm not suggesting that you also have it, but I have also had Irritable Bowel and the symptoms are different for IB. Lets face it, it doesn't matter if you have to see a Gastroentorologist, or a Gynacologist, the fact of the matter is that you are unwell and need treatment, not fobbing off. Best of luck.

After reading over some of the other postings, I've begun to suspect that I could possible have diverticulitis.
According to Webmd, the symptoms are:
Severe, cramping abdominal pain that is usually worse on the left side.
Nausea.
Chills or fever.
Constipation, thin stools, or diarrhea.
Pain in the lower left quadrant of the abdomen that increases when the area is touched.
Rectal bleeding (rare).
Plus, attacks of diverticulitis, from what I've read, seem to occur at any time, and are brought on by not eating enough fiber and eating certain foods that may irritate your system.
I'm going to make another appointment with my doctor to see what he thinks about that idea, and in the mean time, I'm taking Metamucil supplements.
So thank you both for your advice, and if anyone else has any thoughts on what I've written, I'd appreciate hearing them!

My sister has been having some extreme pains in her abdomen. Did your pain stick around for awhile? She has missed 2 days of work and is paralized on the couch. It seems to be extremely painful after she uses the bathroom. It will go away and come back???

A few years ago I had a cyst on one of my ovaries that had ruptured, twisted and stuck to my bowel. My symptoms sound quite a bit like what you are experiencing right now. Whatever the problem is I hope you can get it solved soon. Let us know what you find out.

What procedures did they have to do? Did your pain come in spurts? For example did it hurt for a couple hours and then stop..... for more than a couple days? She is still waiting on the results but that was one thing that the doctor said it could be. Thank you for responding

I had horrible referred pain up into my left shoulder from mine. I think I had some minor cramping but the only real indication something was wrong "down below" was when I tried to have a bowel movement it was like something was twisting. It was so bad quite a few times that I would break out into a sweat and almost pass out. That went on for a couple of weeks but when my shoulder got real bad (about 2 days) I went into the doc. They admitted me to the hospital right away and did an ultrasound and found something. Then they did a ct-scan because they weren't sure what they had found in the u/s and the ovarian cyst and torsion showed up. Hope this helps and she gets some answers right away. Let us know what you find out please.

I've had similar problems. Starting in March and it happens about the same time each month, the week prior to my period. I have pain in my lower right abdomen and it feels like it spreads to my hip and lower back. I have had several ultrasounds, CT-Scan and MRI. There was a possible abnormality on the CT-scan but nothing on the MRI. I don't know what this is. I've also been lightheaded and had headaches and neck pain for the same period of time and am not sure all are related but am searching for answers. Next week I have a brain MRI to check for anything there. Some of it is anxiety but the pain came first.
I hope you are able to figure it out...

Dear ryanandmaran:
You are sure bringing back bad memories to me. I'm sure what happened to me will not happen to you as long as you act quickly pertaining to this condition. You didn't mention if you had any type of surgery (D&C) or laparoscopy procedures.
I did in July of '99 by my Gynocologist, during which time (I did not know), my small intestine was twisted and "looped" during the procedure. I had very similar if not exact symptoms as you, but they were more frequent. I called my Dr. back and he told me this was "normal". I began to have problems eating, I could not find anything to eat that didn't cause these sharp pains in my abdomen. I went in for a follow-up 10 days after surgery. He told me "You're fine, go home, take an enema, take a Percocet, take a shower and go to sleep".
After 3 solid weeks of complaining, with no help or referrals from my Gyn, I woke up to go to the bathroom (urinate) at approx. 4 AM. I doubled over, started throwing up and it felt like someone was slamming an ax into my stomach. My x-husband called the ER and told them he was bringing me in. I had to stop to throw up 3 times during the 20 minute ride. They were waiting for me at the ER with a gurney. (I am not trying to scare you, just warn you and any other woman who might be reading this). They contacted my Gyn and he was off duty that night so I had to wait for his partner to come to the ER (2 hours). During that time I had an x-Ray done IT SHOWED NOTHING ON THE X-RAY. After the Dr. examined me he told me there was nothing wrong, told the ER nurse to make me what he called "A Colonic Cocktail" which consisted of a green chalky tasting substance. It did not help me or the pain. The Dr. came back in 45 minutes later and told me I could go home. I started yelling in the ER...... I want to see a GASTROENTEROLOGIST. I am NOT going home.
I had to wait another excruciatingly painful 2 hours for the new Dr. to show up. He put a stethoscope to my stomach and yelled to the nurses..... get her to ICU STAT, prep her for a abdominal Catscan. A few hours later the prep and Catscan were complete and I had to use the porta potty in my room where I had to very attentive male nurses. They shut the blinds so I could go. I had a bowel movement that was completely mushy blood. I panicked, the nurses panicked, took the specimen out. The Gastroenterologist came back in and said he found gangrene in my small intestine and summoned a surgeon (this was now 10 AM), he told me if I did not have the surgery I was going to die. They could not locate my x-husband to sign papers, so I signed them myself, barely conscious. I didn't really care at that point. The surgeon appeared to be very nice and was supportive and sympathetic, and ended up saving my life by successfully removing 2-1/2 feet of gangrous small intestine. I was in ICU for 3 more days and them moved to main floor for 5 more days.
Again...... WOMEN...... listen to your bodies, that surgeon told me if I didn't come in on that Sunday, I would have been dead that Monday. I ended up with Irritable Bowel Syndrome for the rest of my life, but perhaps this letter will save someone else from going through what I did.
To this very day, I have a hard time trusting Doctors, and always ASK THEM A LOT OF QUESTIONS. Do research at medical sites on the web. I suggest you make an appt. with a GASTROENTEROLOGIST if you haven't already. Remember, my x-Ray did NOT show that anything was wrong. Good luck and good health to you.

That's sounds awful and I'm sorry you went through all that. I have never had any pelvic or abdominal surgery but I am still concerned and continue to pursue this.
