Hey all. I was just wondering if any of u experienced morning diarrhea like me. Every morning I wake up and about 10 minutes later, i start to feel crampy abdominal gas pains. I then know its time to go. Every morning I have mild diarrhea, and only in the am. can anyone tell me why this is happening or how to keep from it? It's an unpleasant thing to wake up to! :(

If you are having gas pains, then this probably means that you need to re-balance the good bacteria in your gut. You can do this by either eating some live yogurt to taking some Acidophilus caps/probiotics. These contain Lactobacillus which is one of the good bacteria that lives in your gut. This should help the excess gas and the diarrhea. Keep them in the fridge and take them twice daily on an empty stomach.
Also, look at your diet and it is likely that you need to include more fiber to bulk up your stools. Try taking some Metamucil twice daily with plenty of water and this will add more bulk to your stools and help to stop the diarrhea. Metamucil is equally as effective for diarrhea as well as constipation.
Also, you should consider taking come Calcium supplements. This helps your gut to absorb water more effectively and can help stop diarrhea. You also lose this when you have diarrhea too.
Good luck.

Well, I think your lucky to only have diarrhea in the am. I have it all day long. I run the the bathroom up to 10 or more times a day. I was told that I have microscopic colitis. And there is no cure for it. I have tried to take Metamucil but that didn't help. I do take pepto bismal tablets. 2-4 a day to try to control it while I work and seems to help. If anyone has any other suggestions I would love to hear it. Would love to be normal again.

Why did the Metamucil not help you?
If this did not help, then try taking a Calcium supplement. You could very well be short on this anyway if you are having constant diarrhea. The Calcium will help your large bowel to absorb more water back naturally and will help to bulk up your stools.
Also start to take some Acidophilus caps twice daily on an empty stomach. If you are having this constant diarrhea, then your gut bacteria need rebalancing. This should really help the diarrhea and any stomach pain that you have too. Keep them in the fridge and take them twice daily on an empty stomach.

Hi, skat. Is your diarrhea related to eating/drinking anything? Sometimes food/liquid intake causes the liver to release bile into overdrive and too much bile in the small intestine can cause diarrhea. Have you had your gall bladder out? That can also lead to increased diarrhea.
Anyway, I know where you're coming from. I have IBS-D (20+ years), and in the last 5, the D has become life altering. I eat Metamucil wafers twice daily, take calcium supplements twice daily, and have also started Colestid (prescription drug) which helps bind up stools and control the amount of bile flowing directly into the small intestine. The combination of those 3 things has been a life saver for me. Colestid doesn't work for everyone, so try the Metamucil and calcium first, and if still no relief, do some research on the use of Colestid for diarrhea or bile salt diarrhea and see if the symptoms fit you. I can honestly say, I have not had to worry about the nearest bathroom everywhere I go for the last 8-10 months. What relief!
Good luck to you,
Katie G

Hi Katie,
That is great. I too have had success with Metamucil, Acidophilus and Calcium supplements. I found out that my stomach problems were caused by food intolerances and since cutting dairy and wheat out of my diet, my stomach has been a lot better. I also have a brilliant ND too which really helps.

What is Acidophilus? I will have to give that a try with the calcium. I know I can't eat fresh fruit. It goes right threw me. Otherwise I've tried cutting some foods out and it does'nt seem to make any difference. I've been to 3 drs. and one told me about pepto bismal tables the other said to eat the metimucal (sp) cookies and another said well if the pepto bismal is helping then don't do anything but I want to be normal again.

Hi, again Skat. I found out about acidophilus on this site and asked the pharmacist about it. He said it's one of the most healthy things we can take for ourselves and has no known interaction with other drugs. Basically it's a capsule that's filled with billions of bacterial organisms that are good for our digestive (especially intestinal) systems. You can find them at most pharmacies and/or Walmart-like stores. The more organisms listed on the informational label the better. I can say that acidophilus has really helped me by reducing "gas" and making my gut feel better. I recommend it highly for anyone, but especially those of us with digestive disorders, like IBS.
I bet Super Sarah can tell you more about it. I've learned a lot from her posts. Thanks Sarah!

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try to go tonight and get some. I'm just wondering why Doctors don't tell us about this. All the Doctors I went to just didn't seem to interested. They just wanted to do some test and that was it. I sure hope this works.
Thanks Again.

Thanks Katie and I'm glad it has worked for you. Everything that I recommend I take myself or have taken.
Skat,
Acidophilus contains bacteria called Lactobacillus and Bifidus and other gut friendly bacteria. These bacteria live in the stomach itself and the large intestine and are needed to help in the process of digestion, with release of digestive enzymes. If they become out of balance or bacteria from one part that should not be there enters another part of your gut, then digestive symptoms can occur, such as abdominal pains and diarrhea/constipation.
Keep on with the Metamucil to increase your fiber and then add in the Acidophilus caps and your stomach pain and diarrhea will probably lessen. The Calcium is good if you have predominantly diarrhea as it helps the gut to absorb water naturally and if you have constipation, then take some Magnesium.
Try and stay away from Pepto Bismol. Long term use of this could give you more problems in the long run and as it contains Aspirin, it could give you more stomach pain also.
Other good things to help if you have stomach pains is to drink some Chamomile or Peppermint tea and also Aloe juice is good for soothing burning pains in your upper stomach. Chamomile and Peppermint is also good for settling an upset stomach.
Good luck.

Thank you for all of the information. I will give it a try. And also thanks for the info on the Pepto Bismal. Espically since i've been taking it daily for approximately 5 years now. I've asked the doctors if it's ok to take it that long and they just say as long as it's helping.
Thanks again.

Hey everyone! I also get diarrhea in the mornings. I stopped drinking milk, soda and I hardly eat any junk food...but I still have it. I still get diarrhea, gas and noises. I'm thinking about drinking milk again, since school's really near and I eat cereal in the mornings. I also started drinking a lot more water & apple/orange juice and just eat the food my mother makes for me. Two days ago, I started taking Meatmucil 3 times every day, but I don't really see any improvment. I'm thinking about purchasing some Calcium & Acidophilus supplements. One more thing...when i get noises...this is pretty embarrasing, the noises don't just come from my bowels...my rectum kinda makes them too. Like a grumbling noise...which is REALLY embarrasing. Please help!

Beware of taking calcium. Calcium with magnesium can be the cause of diarrhea. I can't even take a small calcium of 250mg with magnesium as I will get bad diarrhea within hours. If I take the calcium before beddtime, then I will have the diarrhea when I wake up. I have tried every single calcium on the market and had the same results. And, calcium by itself, constipates. Could it be you're taking any kind of vitamin or supplement before going to bed that you can be sensitive too, as well?
Remember, what works wonderfullly for one person, can be the kiss of death for you. Also, I can't touch yogurt, as yogurt gives me diarrhea. So acidophilus in yogurt, and calcium pills for me means bad diarrhea. I've tried acidophilus pills, and I can only take a fraction of one, or else, guess what? I will have bad diarrhea. There are some people in this HealthBoard Bulletin who are acidophilus disciples, and act as if that will cure all. I have to tell you that there are no foods or supplements that work as they are intended to do for everyone. So, you have to figure out for yourself if these are good or bad for you.
I am lactose intolerant since birth, and if I ate someting with diary at dinner, the diarrhea shows up at breakfast time. You might have the same problem: you see diarrhea from something you eat can take hours to even days to show up. For me, what I eat at dinner, or before bed, can result in morning diarrhea.
If you are having only diarrhea, without nausea, weakness, vomiting or any other distress, then chances are it is related to something you are eating or drinking either in the morning or the day before. Do you drink coffee in the morning before your diarrhea? Coffee for some causes explosive diarrhea as it makes the gallbladder think it ate a steak. For me just drinking hot water in the morning causes me to have diarrhea.
You need to start writing down what you eat each meal, and then start to do the diet of elimination, which is switching to bland foods like white rice, banana, boiled chicken, for enough days until the diarrhea stops. First you need to stop the diarrhea completely, and that is what the bland diet is about.
When it stops, start one by one, to add your regular foods and supplements. Take a couple of days to add a new food or supplement, so you have time to see if you have diarrhea the next morning. This is how allergy specialists has patients with multiple food sensitivites try to pinpoint the offending foods or supplements.
Within a month you should be able to find what your problem is. It's important you keep a dietary journal of your elimination diet. Until then, I would stay away from experimenting how calcium and acidophilus works on your body, as you could just be complicating the situation and make it just that much harder to figure out what is the cause of your morning diarrhea.

if you are lactose intolerant will it bother you every time you eat it? I have diarrhea all day long to and I can't tell even tell any more what triggers it. Although dairy did not always before. I would like to try yogurt, but I don't know if it will cause more problems. Also fiber does not seem to help but I can't tell if it is making me worse or just not helping.

I have the same problems in the morning and have had the problems since I have been smoking. If I wake up when I want to wake up there are no problems. I also cannot have much dairy or I will get terrible as pains. So to the respones of another reply this might be part of the problem. Let me know if there is anyone that has an idea about this.

Skat, I know exactly how you feel. I have Diah all day too. sometimes at night when Im sleeping. its so embarrassing. I do take calcium. I was taking the metamucil but it didnt help me at all. it comes on suddenly (like water) and hopefully Im close to a bathroom. I did have half of my colon out but so did my sister and she doesnt have this. Im going to try the acdephillis (however you spell it) . doesnt seem to matter what I eat when it comes it comes and I hate it . it ruins your life because Im afraid to go anywhere with it. Immodium is little relief but I cant keep on doing that forever.
take care and let me know how you are doing.

I have to say i agree very much with Tammy here. Acidophilus and suplements give me diarreah too. Pepto bismal omg that gives me very bad diarreah as well. I take inmodium an that works and not afraid to use it for long as it is safe long term. Also another thing that helps me is antidepressant remeron. Thats good relief but I just dont feel confortable with physcic drugs. Metamucil I havent tried but I just dont want to experiment with that as all medications that say are good for both diearreah and constipation usually all give me diearreah. Thankfully Im not in such a bad state so far but it still bothers. My problem is not as much diearreah now but the noises and rumbling is what annoys me most and I know it has to do with gas. The curious thing is only at night and morning during the day is quite quiet. I just know when the rumbling stops I will be cured. Im going to the gastro this week and will see if he can say something, they seem to say that the rumbling and noise is nothing but that is bull because thats a clear sign to me things are not normal. I will keep fighting to get to know what can stop this disturbing noises, must be something going on. I get some frustated with doctors sometimes, I feel like i know more than them most of the time!
