View Full Version : questioning the ENTs diagnosis

I started with breathing problems about 6 months ago. I've went to a heart specialist who ruled out my heart as being the problem. Then I went to a pulmonoligist who ruled out my lungs, but said that I needed to see an ENT because of a lot of drainage in my throat. Well about a month ago, my throat started hurting, and I started having these awful spasm like feelings in my throat. Especially after I eat. I got and appointment with an ENT doctor. I went to see him, and within 5 minutes I had a diagnosis of GERD. Well I had an endoscopy done before this by a gastroenterologist because of stomach pain, who said I had very little reflux. He recommended taking medicines over the counter as needed but that I really didn't need a prescription med. Anyway, I told this to the ENT, but he really didn't seem to listen. He was very friendly, and I had my four year old with me that was acting up that day. So it was hard for him to listen to me. Anyway I went away with a prescription for an antibiotic for sinus infection and zantac. That afternoon it got really bad so I called his office back. At the time my tongue was even swelling and my throat was really hurting. His partner was in the office, and told me to go to the ER and that he was calling to order some tests. He agreed it wasn't GERD. THey took blood, did a throat culture, and did a ct of the neck, because the left side of my neck was swelling some. All came back clear, but they gave me an antibiotic via IV in the ER. THen sent me home with prednisone for the swelling and told me to follow up with the ENT in a few days. I did follow up, with my ENT, (not the partner that I called), and he called me to the window of the office and talked to me through the window. I don't have any insurance so he said he was trying to save me an office visit. I told him about the ER. and he is still saying GERD. I tried to explain to him about everything, but he said to have patience and to let the Zantac work. I am set up for a ct scan of the sinuses in a week, and he will follow up with me then. I could not convince him to look down my throat with that light and camera thing. It's still hurting, and the spasms come and go. I can't swallow well because it feels like something is stuck in my throat. I have a lot of post nasal drip. I'm about to just give up, but I know something is wrong. What should I do?
It may be nothing, but I just wish he would look and see. He's supposed to be a good ENT doctor. He did really well when he took my daughters tonsils out about a month ago. I've had my tonsils out, so it's not tonsil related. Please give me some advice. I quit smoking about 10 years ago. I'm scared it may be cancer or some kind of throat disfunction.
