About 10 years ago I had my fingernail smashed playing sports. The nail turned all purple and had a big dent in it, but it never fell off. Anyways, it grew back more to normal VERY VERY slowly and still grows a bit funny.
The nail is pretty well flat now (no more dent), but there is a thin layer of nail that grows on top of about half the nail. Half of this thin layer is like the normal part of your nail (the pink area), while the other half of the thin nail is more like the white part of a nail, but it grows overtop of the pink area of the underlying nail. (yes, this is confusing and very hard to describe) It's like a really thin piece of nail overtop of my nail, but the thin piece only grows about halfway over the nail and then the white part of the thin nail grows... it's weird and it's been like this for years.
What I'm wondering is, is there anything I could do to try and get it growing properly again. Half of me wants to smash it with a hammer and get a new nail. ....well, okay maybe not.

If the matrix (the white half-moon at the base of the nail that we call the lunula) was damaged, the effects will be permanent. The matrix is where the nail plate cells are 'born', and once this is damaged or comppromised, the nail plate will always show the results of the damage.
