My MIL has been sick for a week or more now, she was even in the hospital for a few day because she thought she was having a heart attack, a few days after she returned home from the hospital she developed a nasty rash. She went to the Dr. and the Dr says she has Scarlet fever.
My question is that I have a 11 month old DD and because we and the Drs thought she was having heart problems we haven't been very cautious about grandma handling the baby.We all live together. Has anyone dealt we a baby who's had scarlet fever? What signs should I look for? Im taking her to the Dr's but we can't get in untill wensday, Im just wondering what I should be careful of untill then. I know my MIL's sister had it when she was a baby and has had life long heart prblems because of it. Im so scared now. Anyone have any info? PLZ help a worried mommy.

Scarlet fever is actually just strep throat with a rash and is very treatable. Both of our boys had it when they were in elementary school and one course of amoxicillin took care of it. If your baby gets it, and I may be wrong but I think its rare in a child under three, she will probably run a fever, refuse to eat, etc. In other words, you'll know she is sick most likely. If not, at least the rash which will appear within a few days would alert you. Antibiotics will take care of it and should prevent any future heart problems. It used to be common to have heart and/or kidney problems following strep or scarlet fever, but that was before antibiotics were readily available to treat it. Also, in my 17 1/2 years as a mom with three kids who have had strep quite often I can tell you that it has never appeared to be "overly" contagious. Our two boys even had slept together once the night before one was diagnosed with strep and the other never did catch it that time. I think your daughter will probably be fine.

I agree with the last poster. My son had this two years ago. It is bascially strep with a rash. My son took antibiotics and was good to go in no time. Good Luck, I know it's hard not to worry

Thanks for the replies! I remember babysitting my cousins when I was younger and them having it and it wasn't a big deal, I was just wondering if it was worse in infants. I think the worst part is that my MIL is SOOO sick it makes me worry about my DD getting that sick, although I'm sure it's not likely. Thanks again for making me feel a bit better!

Both of my children had it at a very young age. It began as a red throat followed by a rash. Antibiotics cured it quickly without problems. My advice is see a physician, and be on the lookout with your other children
