View Full Version : Is it weird to not have headaches?

Actually, I have two questions.

1) What causes headaches? The brain doesn't have pain receptors, so it can't be pain in the brain itself. I've heard that a headache comes from stretching or other distortions of the blood vessels that supply the brain: they do have pain receptors. Is that correct?

2) Is it unusual for someone to have never had a headache? I have never had one, and I'm 42 years old.

Can't help with Question One. Q.2: please give thanks to whatever mightier power/s you believe in! If you are headache prone (as many of us are) this sounds like a great blessing! Don't question it! (PS. Hope you never do have one!)

You are just toooooo lucky!!!!!! :)
I experience headaches often, especially tension headaches. I think almost everyone has experienced headaches in their lives. If you never had a headache before, then you are probably 1 in a million!

What causes headaches? That's a loaded question. Different kinds of headaches have different causes.

But I think what you really meant to ask is what allows our head to hurt, if the brain doesn't have any pain receptors. In most cases, the answer is that inflammation and swelling in the brain (at the site of an injury, for instance) squeeze tissues surrounding the brain called the meninges (which DO have pain receptors) against the skull. This causes pain. In most cases.

Oh, and lucky you! Never had a headache? Wow.

Why are you in the headache forum, then? :)
